Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To play a key role in enhancing FSRA’s brand with the sectors it regulates and with consumers by supporting media relations, issues management and contributing to the development and implementation of an integrated digital strategy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Media Relations:

  • Identify newsworthy items and opportunities to work with internal teams to create strategies and digital content to generate media interest.

  • Provide strategic advice on media releases, targeted media pitches, media advisories and other communications activities.

  • Support participation in media interviews and participate in media training as required.

  • Ensure media lists and contacts are current and updated.

  • Develop and maintain media metrics.

Issues Management:

  • Build out FSRA’s listening/monitoring strategy on social media and in the media to identify and mitigate emerging/contentious issues and trends with potential implications for FSRA.

  • Understand the issues and identify sector-wide or financial services issues trending or attracting attention in the media or on social media.

  • Provide strategic, actionable insights for improving key messaging and recommend containment processes to address these issues under tight deadlines.

  • Provide summary reports which include analysis and recommendations (issue notes and content) to inform executives and key stakeholders.

  • Highlight top influencers trending and communication on the identified issues and provide strategic advice for engagement.

  • Provide strategic communications expertise in coordinating program delivery with respect to Freedom of Information requests made under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Integrated Digital Strategy:

  • Support the strategic implementation of digital strategies for media, industry and consumer engagement.  This includes a 360o approach using corporate communications, public relations, media relations, social media and digital communications.

Content Strategy:

  • Together with the team, works to identify and develop digital and multi-media content.

  • Provide support and strategic advice on digital writing and tactics.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Knowledge and Skills:

  • University/college post-secondary diploma or degree in Public Relations or related field.

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in digital, communications, public relations, journalism or a related discipline.

  • Excellent written communication skills.

  • Integrated digital campaign (multi-channel) experience including methods/strategies.

  • Understanding of media relations and strategies,

  • Communications planning, methods and techniques, research practices, social media trends.

  • Analytical skills and political acuity to assess the information needs of the media and/or stakeholders; identify politically sensitive issues which may impact FSRA programs (e.g., government priorities for the financial services industries); and to respond to questions from the media regarding contentious issues or initiatives receiving media and/or public attention.

  • Project management methods to plan, lead and coordinate projects.

  • Analytical skills to lead an issues management process, analyze issues, and decide the extent to which they may become contentious and to ensure that executive management is alerted and fully equipped for suitable, timely responses.

  • Client service skills including diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive issues and a range of personalities, motives, and interests. Understand diverse client needs.

  • Detail-orientated and strong analytical skills (metric and trend analysis).

  • Able to multi-task on concurrent projects and work well under pressure.

  • Understanding of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation and an understanding of the Act's philosophy, intent, application, and access limitations, to ensure adherence to the legal requirements and time restrictions of the Act.

Decision Making:

  • Determine what information is newsworthy and valuable for furthering communication objectives, in consultation with supervisor and team members.

  • Facilitate and provide advice regarding requests for media interviews, and media strategies. Support media training initiatives.

  • Determine which announcements could generate media or social media interest.  Identify specific media and/or social media outlets for targeted pitches.

  • Determine, recommend, and implement opportunities for integrating stories and information into a range of FSRA communications vehicles for maximize effectiveness and reach.
