The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics: $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary.

Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour.
Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour.
Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics.
Uniforms and Laundry Service provided.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday, rotating shifts of 1:30pm to 10:30pm and 4:30pm to 1:30am; occasional Saturdays.
This position is eligible for overtime.
In addition, a shift differential of $1.00/hour will be paid for working the following hours:

Monday – Friday: 6:30 PM until 4:00 AM
Saturday – all day (24 hours)

Job Summary

Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies and procedures, develops foundational skills in transit vehicle maintenance by performing manufacturer-specified preventive maintenance (PM) services and safety inspections on transit and service vehicles. Assists with routine component replacements, basic repairs, and field service calls while learning proper diagnostic techniques, safe work practices, and shop operations. Uses basic hand tools, service information resources, and fleet maintenance software to document all work performed and to support more experienced technicians with tasks such as fluid and filter changes, tire service, exhaust components, driveline repairs, brakes, suspension, basic electrical systems, and standard Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance procedures. Maintains a clean and safe work environment and demonstrates a willingness to learn and grow within Greenlink’s technician development pathway.
Progression path: Entry Level Diesel Mechanic ? Diesel Bus Mechanic ? Senior Diesel Bus Mechanic ? Shop Foreman. All tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop resources are provided. Uniforms and laundry service, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves are also provided. Eligible for additional OEM and ASE-certifying coursework.

Essential Functions	% of Time
Perform Preventative Maintenance and Repairs: Perform manufacturer-specified PM services and safety checks on all transit and service vehicles including completing fluid and filter changes during PM services; inspecting, testing, and repairing cooling system components such as hoses, thermostats, and heater cores; replacing basic gasoline engine components including spark plugs, coil packs, and fuel injectors; diagnosing and replacing hydraulic brake components such as pads, rotors, brake lines, and calipers; and servicing suspension components including shocks and bushings. Replace driveline components such as u-joints and mid-shaft bearings, and repair or replace exhaust system components including mufflers, hangers, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC). Perform basic electrical diagnosis and repairs involving headlights, brake lights, fuses, and relays while following established safety and maintenance procedures.	85%
Clean and Maintain Shop Area: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Assist coworkers by sweeping, mopping, organizing tools and equipment, and ensuring work surfaces remain free of debris, spills, or clutter. Clean tools and shop equipment after use and return all items to their designated storage areas. Support daily shop readiness by following proper housekeeping and safety standards.	10%
Provide On-call Field Service: Respond to field service calls and assess vehicle and worksite safety upon arrival. Perform basic on-site diagnostic checks to determine whether the vehicle can be repaired in the field or requires towing to the shop. Conduct essential field repairs such as tire changes, battery replacements, and vehicle jump starts as needed. Ensure all actions follow safety guidelines and established procedures.	5%

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least six (6) months of prior automotive repair experience.
OR completion of a technical automotive or diesel technology training/certification program.
OR completion of a City of Greenville mechanic internship.

Completion of Greenlink Diesel Bus Mechanic competency classification test when a total of two (2) years of experience is complete; one (1) year of experience must be as Greenlink Entry-Level Diesel Mechanic.

Preferred Qualifications

Over one (1) year of experience in automotive repair.

Experience maintaining and repairing buses or other various transit vehicles.

Driver's License Requirements

Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.

Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.

Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.

Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

OSHA and safe working practices and procedures, including hazard recognition, PPE use, and basic shop safety expectations.

Automotive vehicle and diesel equipment service requirements and preventive maintenance procedures.

Basic diagnostic principles and the use of service information systems to support entry-level troubleshooting.

Fundamental learning and development practices such as adapting to new procedures, learning through hands-on tasks, and applying new skills to assigned work.

Workplace communication practices, including working effectively alongside senior technicians and supervisors.

Fleet documentation requirements, including completing check sheets, recording repair actions, and entering data accurately into maintenance software.

Ability to:

Perform multi-point vehicle and equipment inspections and identify service needs.

Perform tire rotations and related tire service tasks.

Respond to service calls, perform basic diagnostics in the field, and prepare vehicles to be towed when necessary.

Learn new procedures, tools, and technologies efficiently and apply them to daily work.

Maintain situational awareness and follow safe work practices while performing physical tasks such as lifting, standing, and handling equipment.

Work cooperatively with coworkers, ask questions when appropriate, follow direction, and contribute to a positive team environment.

Accurately document work performed, complete check sheets, and ensure consistent recordkeeping for repairs and PM services.

Read and follow equipment manuals, work procedures, policies, and OEM maintenance instructions.

Apply practical math skills including fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.

Write clear and accurate reports and emails using proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Safely and effectively use a full range of shop tools and equipment including hand tools, diagnostic instruments, electrical and pneumatic tools, A/C recovery equipment, forklifts, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press.

Operate desktop and laptop computers for electronic diagnostics and documentation, including use of Cummins Insite and fleet maintenance software.

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Fleet Maintenance or Transit Bus Shop. Occasional outside work.

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves (all provided).

Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards. Frequent exposure to fire hazards and communicable diseases.

Physical Demands:
Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting, and handling/grasping. Very Heavy strength demands include exerting 100-150 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.

Mental Demands:
