Overview

The Yale School of Art Fabrication Shops seeks a PT Shop technician to work 20 hours per week starting in October 2026. The Fabrication Shops include a 6100 sq ft wood and metalworking space at 36 Edgewood and a satellite 300 sq ft finishing shop at 353 Crown St.   Reporting to the Fabrication Shop Managers , The technician will work closely with both the shop supervisor and student shop monitors to maintain safe, clean, functional workspaces. The technician will also train and support both graduate and undergraduate students on safe machine use and supervise shop users during open hours. 

Required Skills and Abilities

• Oversee the safety and cleanliness of wood and metal shop equipment and workspaces.
• Provide personalized hands-on support to graduate and undergraduate students of varying levels of fabrication experience during preparation for weekly critiques, thesis exhibitions, and final reviews.
• Delegate tasks for daily shop upkeep to graduate student shop monitors, including thoroughly vacuuming all woodshop and metal shop machines, disposing of trash and recyclables, organizing scrap bins, sweeping floors, and clearing the dust collector.
• Maintain machines and equipment to make sure all are in working order, including changing table saw blades, compound miter saw blades, woodshop bandsaw blades, mig welder and plasma cutting nozzles, horizontal bandsaw blades, belt sander paper, and drum sander paper.
• Open and close the shop as needed when shop monitors are not present, including turning on power, opening access, organizing and returning misplaced tools, shutting off power, and securing all doors.
• Directly supervise the safe and proper usage of a myriad of woodworking and metalworking machines
• Perform light administrative tasks, such as updating, printing, and posting Shop Hours, Shop Sign-In sheets, and Monitor Sign-In sheets, as well as circulating weekly Shop Monitor Schedule.
• Work with shop staff to respond in the event of an emergency including performing First Aid, CPR, and using AEDs if necessary.
• Ability to learn new apparati and techniques.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Assumes primary responsibility for a program, service, activity, operation or function in an assigned area. Develops objectives, practice and procedure and identifies resources to ensure accomplishment of operational goals. 2. Coordinates day-to-day operations in order to achieve designated goals. Ensures effective management and leads the development and implementation of best practices. 3. Designs and implements quality control metrics to identify areas of risk. Analyzes, recommends, and implements strategic solutions to minimize risk. 4. Develops a variety of complex report and other written materials. 5. Provides guidance to and collaboration with internal and external partners as necessary. 6. Develops, oversees and monitors budgets. 7. Develops and maintains specialized training. 8. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
