About this opportunity

At the device communication research organization within Ericsson we develop new concepts and solutions based on 5G and its evolution towards 6G.

We are looking for students with an interest in communication technology to contribute to research on future device modem capabilities. The master thesis project will study how Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) can be applied for RF sensing, including the use of satellite signals to detect objects on or near the ground.

What you will do

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:

  • Conduct a literature study covering RF sensing using non-terrestrial network signals, with focus on bistatic and multistatic sensing concepts.
  • Define a representative LEO satellite constellation scenario where one or more NTN satellites act as illuminators and one or more NTN devices act as receivers.
  • Develop a simulation model for NTN-based RF sensing of objects on or near the ground, including low-altitude flying objects such as drones.
  • Analyze bistatic sensing performance when multiple satellites form a virtual transmitter aperture and a single NTN device acts as receiver.
  • Extend the analysis to multistatic sensing with multiple NTN devices as receivers, and study how satellite geometry, receiver placement, target position, and signal assumptions affect sensing performance.
  • Summarize the feasibility, main limitations, and potential future research directions for using NTN signals in device-based RF sensing.

The skills you bring

  • Final year master's student in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar with background in electromagnetics.
  • Genuine interest in wireless communication technologies.
  • Experience in simulation tools such as MATLAB
  • Eager to learn, ambitious, having an innovative mentality as well as being a true standout colleague.
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written communication.
