The CAD Designer / Detailer is responsible for creating, modifying, and maintaining detailed engineering drawings and 3D models for fabricated equipment, structural steel assemblies, and industrial machinery. This position works closely with engineers, manufacturing personnel, project managers, and vendors to develop accurate documentation that supports fabrication, assembly, installation, and procurement activities.
Essential Job Functions:
Design and Drafting
- Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Develop fabrication, assembly, and installation drawings from engineering concepts and calculations.
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs), cut lists, weldment details, and drawing packages.
- Create and maintain part, assembly, and drawing files in accordance with company standards.
- Produce detailed component drawings for machining, fabrication, and purchased parts.
- Apply GD&T principles and dimensioning practices as required.
Engineering Support
- Collaborate with engineers to transform conceptual designs into manufacturable products.
- Support design reviews and incorporate feedback into revised drawings.
- Assist with design improvements focused on manufacturability, cost reduction, and standardization.
- Participate in prototype development, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
Documentation and Change Management
- Maintain engineering documentation within the company's PDM/PLM and ERP systems.
- Process engineering change requests, AAR change notice and revise drawings accordingly.
- Ensure document control procedures are followed.
- Support development and maintenance of engineering standards and drafting practices.
Manufacturing Support
- Provide technical support to fabrication, welding, machining, and assembly teams.
- Resolve drawing discrepancies and manufacturing issues.
- Assist with shop floor layout reviews and fit-up evaluations.
- Coordinate with purchasing regarding material specifications and vendor requirements.
Quality and Safety
- Verify drawing accuracy and completeness before release.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards, codes, and safety requirements MIOSHA, MSHA and OSHA.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes and documentation.
Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Mechanical Design Technology, Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of CAD detailing and mechanical design experience.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar.
- Experience creating detailed fabrication and assembly drawings.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawing standards and drafting principles.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications and technical documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with structural steel, heavy equipment, process equipment, or industrial machinery.
- Knowledge of weldments, fabricated assemblies, machining, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with ERP, PDM, or PLM systems.
- Knowledge of GD&T.
- Experience working in a project-based manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) concepts.
