Communications Specialist-Pol

Pay range: $26.45 - $38.77 per hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.    Perform call taker functions to receive, screen, disseminate and record emergency 9-1-1 calls and nonemergency information from the general public, and federal, state and local government agencies to employees within the department via telephone, text to 9-1-1, and Teletype Device for the Deaf (TDD). 
2.    Dispatch, advise and maintain radio communications with police patrol, traffic, animal control, Admin, ESS, Mutual Aid, fire, local government, and detective units in the field. 
3.    Enter and retrieve data in multiple computer systems such as Computer Aided Dispatch System, (CAD), Regional Justice Information System (REJIS), Missouri Uniformed Law Enforcement System, (MULES), Chameleon (Animal Control), Mobile Data Terminals, Vesta Phone System, StarChase, KC Scout Cameras, and National Crime Information Center, (NCIC).
4.    Receive, cancel, and/or file orders of protection, stolen property, missing persons and runaways, and stolen autos. 
5.    Receive, enter and disseminate operational and routine reports and messages. 
6.    Operate all secured entries within the Police Building, which includes all video and audio equipment within the building, outside the building and the jail entrances and exits.
7.    Utilize multiple resources to gather, analyze, document critical information, and/or forward to the appropriate agency during life-or-death situations such as crimes in progress, medical emergencies, and fire/rescue incidents.
8.    Perform assigned duties and tasks in a fast, effective, efficient and safe manner with self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of the time without direct supervision. 
9.    Accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization’s mission, goal and objectives and comply with its directives. 
10.    Conduct safety status checks of responders and use other available technology to ensure on-scene responders’ safety
11.    Follow established agency policies and procedures, being aware of liability to the agency, and adhering to federal disclosure and privacy laws
12.    Work assigned shift, including weekends and holidays, with both regular and punctual attendance. 

Peripheral Duties:
1.    Use debriefing tools, stress management techniques and critical incident response models to deal with mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances
2.    Perform basic troubleshooting of public safety related software, hardware, and equipment and report any needed repairs
3.    Perform area housekeeping tasks as needed.
4.    May involve operating a motor vehicle. 
5.    May conduct on the job training for new employees, often perform one-on-one training while on duty. 
6.    Performs all other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must be 18 years of age at time of employment.

2. High School Diploma or equivalent.

3. Must be a United States citizen or authorized alien worker.

4. Valid state Driver’s License and acceptable driving record required.

5. No felony convictions or commission of or participation in any felony crime, whether detected or not.

6. No on-going or repetitious history of committing or participating in Misdemeanor crimes, whether detected or not.

7. Creditable work history.

8. No experience required; six months to one year of experience in a related field preferred

9. Able to work assigned shift, including nights, weekends and holidays.

10. Must have or be able to obtain REJIS and MULES Certification within six (6) months of hire.

11. Must pass the required computerized testing using the Criti-Call Testing Software.

12. Must pass drug screening. No marijuana in the last 6 months.
