Position Purpose
The Chemical Engineering Front Desk Student Assistant serves as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the department. This position supports daily administrative operations by providing excellent customer service, managing front desk communications, assisting with routine office tasks, and helping maintain a welcoming and professional environment. The student worker plays an important role in ensuring efficient department operations while gaining valuable experience in office administration, communication, and customer service.
Responsibilities
Provide front desk coverage during assigned shifts and serve as the first point of contact for department visitors.
Answer and route call on a multi-line phone system.
Respond to basic questions and direct visitors to appropriate resources.
Sort and distribute incoming mail.
Check out and track keys for department-controlled spaces.
Assist with poster printing and copy requests.
Scan, organize, and archive departmental records and documents.
May assist with shipping and receiving tasks as needed.
May assist with departmental events as needed.
May provide occasional support at the Academic Advising front desk.
Complete other administrative tasks and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Current UT Austin undergraduate student eligible for Federal Work-Study employment.
Ability to work independently and follow established procedures and instructions.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Dependable, punctual, and able to manage responsibilities during scheduled shifts.
Basic computer proficiency, including experience with email, Microsoft Office applications, and data entry.
Salary Range
$12/hr

Work Shift
Standard business hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
12-15 hours per week based on availability
Must be able to work a consistent schedule Monday through Friday
Coordination of schedule and classes will be coordinated with supervisor
