SUMMARY

Fleet Shop Supervisor – Lead with Purpose in Charlotte’s Fleet Operations
The Fleet Management Division is seeking a dedicated and experienced Fleet Shop Supervisor to lead a team of skilled ASE & EVT automotive, diesel and equipment maintenance technicians. This is a key leadership role that ensures the reliability and readiness of the City’s diverse fleet—supporting essential services that keep Charlotte moving.
As a Fleet Shop Supervisor, you will:
• Provide hands-on leadership and guidance to technicians, fostering a culture of teamwork, safety, and accountability.
• Coordinate daily operations, including staff scheduling, workload prioritization, and shift management to ensure efficient service delivery.
• Serve as a critical liaison between the shop and City departments, maintaining open communication about fleet availability, service timelines, and customer concerns.
• Monitor and analyze performance metrics, using data to track repair progress, optimize workflows, and ensure timely completion of work orders.
• Oversee shop safety and equipment maintenance, ensuring a clean, compliant, and hazard-free work environment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to vehicle and equipment maintenance; support effective decision-making on repair strategies.

  • Plan, organize, and direct daily shift operations to meet fleet availability and service delivery goals.

  • Monitor and coordinate vendor activities to ensure timely completion of repairs and part replacements under the warranty management program.

  • Assist the Shop Manager in overseeing daily shop operations and supporting team leadership.

  • Provide responsive customer service to internal departments by communicating updates and coordinating fleet-wide projects and initiatives.

  • Track and manage work order progress to ensure timely completion and maintain optimal fleet availability.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with staff, operational departments, and local vendors to foster trust and collaboration.

  • Support the development and implementation of procedures that promote a safe, efficient, and productive work environment.

  • Monitor, document, and provide input on employee performance for use in annual performance evaluations.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support shop operations and departmental goals.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Technical Knowledge & Systems Proficiency

  • Broad knowledge and hands-on experience in the repair and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty fleet equipment.

  • Proficient in using computer-based Fleet Management Information Systems (FMIS) to track maintenance, repairs, and performance metrics.

  • Ability to learn and navigate cloud-based financial software for monitoring purchase orders, invoice processing, and budget tracking.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) for reporting, communication, and documentation.

Leadership & Decision-Making

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make fair, fact-based decisions with confidence and sound judgment.

  • Skilled in coaching and counseling staff, with support from upper management as needed.

  • Committed to maintaining positive employee morale and fostering a collaborative team environment.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Strong customer service orientation, with the ability to build cooperative relationships and respond effectively to internal department needs.

  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to evaluate customer satisfaction, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions that enhance service delivery.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or certification in Automotive Technology, Diesel Mechanics, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.

  • Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE Master certifications

  • At least five years of leadership experience in a fleet shop operation. 

  • Preferred experience in progressively responsible leadership roles within fleet or maintenance operations, with a proven ability to guide and develop teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or lead technician role within a fleet or maintenance environment. This should be supplemented by an additional three (3) years of progressive supervisory experience in a fleet maintenance and repair setting.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
