Position Summary 

The PRN Pharmacist provides safe, effective, patient-centered pharmaceutical care at NeighborHealth's onsite 340B pharmacy on an as-needed basis, supporting pharmacy operations during staffing shortages, vacations, weekends, holidays, and high-volume periods. This role covers prescription dispensing, patient counseling, immunizations, and regulatory and 340B program compliance.  This is a PRN, non-exempt position.  


Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

Patient Care 

  • Review, verify, and dispense prescription medications accurately 
  • Counsel patients on medication use, dosage, side effects, interactions, and adherence 
  • Provide recommendations for over-the-counter (OTC) medications and health products. 
  • Administer immunizations and other pharmacist-provided clinical services 
  • Conduct medication therapy reviews and reconciliations 
  • Address patient questions and concerns regarding medications and health conditions 

Pharmacy Operations 

  • Ensure accurate prescription processing and verification, and compliance with federal, state, and company regulations 
  • Oversee pharmacy technicians and support staff to maintain safe, efficient workflow 
  • Manage controlled substances in accordance with DEA and state board regulations 
  • Assist with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, storage, and removal of expired products, for both 340B and non-340B medications 
  • Resolve insurance claim issues and support prior authorization processes 
  • Use pharmacy management systems, e-prescribing platforms, and dispensing technology to support accurate, efficient operations; maintain accurate electronic records and safeguard PHI 

Training and Development 

  • Complete required onboarding, compliance, and continuing education within established timeframes 
  • Maintain active pharmacist licensure and required certifications, including immunization certification 
  • Assist in training and mentoring pharmacy technicians, interns, and new staff as needed 

Customer Service and Compliance 

  • Deliver excellent customer service and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other providers to optimize patient care 
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and a clean, safe, organized pharmacy environment 
  • Identify and report medication errors and adverse drug events 
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

Requirements

Required Skills or Abilities 

  • Computer literacy in internet use and Windows environment, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. 
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with co-workers and community members. 
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds. 
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing workloads.

Required Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure/Registration 

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. 
  • Current and unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of practice. 
  • Current immunization certification. 
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and retail pharmacy operations. 
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English fluently as needed to perform essential job functions, including patient communication, documentation, and safety-related instructions. 

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure/Registration 

  • One or more years of retail pharmacy experience. 
  • Certification to administer immunizations. 
  • Experience with pharmacy management systems and third-party billing. 
  • Familiarity with medication synchronization, MTM, and clinical service programs. 

Physical requirements of the Job 

With or without reasonable accommodation, this position requires the ability to: 

  • Stand for extended periods of time while assisting patients and handling medications 
  • Lift up to 30 pounds safely and carry items across the pharmacy 
  • Use manual dexterity to accurately measure, label, and dispense medications 
  • Bend, stoop, reach, and crouch to access storage areas and complete pharmacy tasks 
  • Read labels, enter data, and communicate clearly with patients and team members 
  • Maintain focus for prolonged periods while performing repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently 

Health and Safety Requirements 

Up-to-date immunizations as required for the role, subject to medical or religious exemption requests in accordance with applicable law and NHC policy.
