The Role and Why It's Important
As the Human Resources and Accounting Manager at Hy-Vee, you'll oversee both people operations and store accounting; two of the most critical functions in the building. From recruiting, payroll, and employee relations to cash accountability, accounts payable, and monthly reconciliations, your work keeps the store financially sound and the team well-supported.

What You'll Do
No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:
Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly and assisting them throughout the store
Coordinate all employee information updates in the time and attendance system including inputting, changing, and deleting records
Counsel department heads and employees on performance reviews, scheduling, benefits, wages, and personnel matters; serve as Insurance Coordinator and 401(k) Coordinator
Develop and manage recruiting and retention programs; facilitate the full hiring process including interviewing, placement, orientation, and training
Coordinate employee transfers between stores and track vacation and personal days for all store employees
Conduct performance reviews and exit interviews; attend weekly staff and assistant manager meetings
Make payroll adjustments including bonuses and missed pay raises; transmit sales, hours, adjustments, and accounts receivable to the corporate office weekly
Disperse paychecks, W-2s, and Trust Fund and 401(k) reports; distribute company and store communications including birthdays and anniversaries
Prepare employee wage and employment verifications, disability claims, and leave of absence requests
Record and follow up on Workers Compensation claims and complete accident reports for customers and employees
Schedule employees, honor time-off requests, and arrange coverage for call-ins
Evaluate daily money needs, maintain appropriate safe balances, count the safe, verify gift cards, and gather Western Union and utility reports
Scan checks, balance cash and checks, and prepare daily deposits
Reconcile miscellaneous bags, verify register ending balances, and prepare checkout and cash accountability reports
Reconcile invoices, enter into the system, and send to corporate; complete all monthly reconciliations to balance with corporate
Prepare unpaid invoice reports, reconcile Electronic Funds Transfer, and manage store accounts receivable with corporate monthly
Reconcile expense and merchandise spreadsheets and complete FTD and Teleflora reconciliations monthly
Run department invoice reports, prepare invoices held at store for corporate, and collect bad checks as needed
Coordinate quarterly employee meetings, store events, service award programs, and bonus meetings
Handle customer complaints and send follow-up and thank-you correspondence
Handle confidential employee records and sensitive information with strict discretion
Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed
You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, and Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Perishables, and Store Operations
Your Skills
To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:
Communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally with employees and leadership
Interview, counsel, and advise employees and managers with professionalism and discretion
Solve practical problems and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Work accurately with financial data, reconciliations, and accounting processes
Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages
Handle confidential records and cash with strict accuracy and discretion
High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR and accounting coursework required; Hy-Vee experience preferred
Reporting Relationships
Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, and Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Perishables, and Store Operations
Direct Reports: All other store positions and any assigned by Store Manager
Education and Experience
High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR and accounting coursework required
Hy-Vee experience preferred
Physical Requirements
Physical activity is incidental to the core duties of the role
Occasionally walk the floor or facility to observe operations, staff, or product
Where applicable to the role: ability to occasionally handle product for demonstration purposes
No regular lifting, carrying, or physical exertion required
Working Environment
This role is performed in a fast-paced store environment with continuous exposure to cash and financial documents for reconciliation purposes and occasional deadline pressure. You may occasionally encounter exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
