OVERVIEW:
The Senior Accountant, Project Accounting is a key member of the accounting team and is responsible for providing financial stewardship, reporting, forecasting, and control oversight for the organization's project portfolio. Working closely with Project Managers, business stakeholders, FP&A, Procurement, and Finance leadership, this role ensures project financial performance is accurately tracked, analyzed, and reported throughout the project lifecycle.
The position serves as a trusted financial advisor to project teams by delivering meaningful financial insights, supporting decision-making, monitoring budgets and forecasts, and enhancing project financial controls and reporting capabilities. The role plays a key part in improving project financial transparency, reporting automation, and governance across both capital and operating projects.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Monitor and analyze project budgets, forecasts, commitments, and actual expenditures throughout the project lifecycle.
Prepare and deliver project financial reporting, dashboards, variance analysis, and portfolio insights for Finance leadership and stakeholders.
Partner with Project Managers and business stakeholders to support budgeting, forecasting, funding, and financial decision-making.
Monitor project financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions where required.
Support project setup, maintenance, closeout activities, and associated month-end and year-end accounting processes.
Maintain effective financial controls and ensure project financial information is accurate, complete, and aligned with organizational policies and governance requirements.
Support internal and external audit requests and assist in resolving financial reporting and data quality issues.
Act as a subject matter expert for project financial reporting within ERP and project management systems.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives related to project reporting, forecasting, controls, data integrity, and reporting automation.
Build strong partnerships across Finance, EPMO, IT, Procurement, and business teams to enhance project financial management and reporting effectiveness.
WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:
CPA designation preferred. Candidates with significant project accounting, management accounting, financial reporting, or related experience will be strongly considered.
5+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or financial analysis experience.
Experience supporting project portfolios, capital programs, or operational initiatives.
Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and management reporting.
Experience with ERP systems such as Workday, SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms.
Advanced Excel and data analysis skills.
Experience developing dashboards, financial reporting packages, and performance metrics is considered an asset.
Experience supporting technology, digital transformation, software implementation, ERP, or other technology-focused projects is considered a strong asset.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to translate complex financial information into meaningful business insights and recommendations.
Strong understanding of project financial management principles, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and business partnering abilities.
Ability to influence decision-making through financial analysis and reporting.
Self-starter with the ability to work independently and take ownership of outcomes.
Comfortable with ambiguity and able to adapt to changing priorities.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Experience coordinating automated ERP reporting and reporting improvement initiatives.
Continuous improvement mindset focused on enhancing reporting, controls, and business processes.
