Description
Job Description:
Most intermediate accounting roles put you inside a machine someone else built, on a narrow slice of the close. Here you are helping build the machine.
You will work across multiple entities at once, which is the fastest way to learn how businesses actually differ. Consulting revenue recognised against tracked hours behaves nothing like recurring software revenue, which behaves nothing like a data centre lease. You will see all of it in the same month.
You will also sit two steps from the investment team. When Onni Capital acquires a business, the accounting integration is real work with a real deadline, not a theoretical exercise.
We expect you to automate the parts of your job that should be automated. Nobody here is measured on hours spent in a spreadsheet.
How We Work
Onni Capital is being designed as a high ownership, low bureaucracy team. We work in small project groups, test ideas quickly, put early products in front of users, and make decisions based on evidence rather than hierarchy. Team members are expected to:
- Challenge assumptions and communicate directly
- Take responsibility for outcomes, not simply produce recommendations
- Use modern AI tools to work faster and produce better results
- Share unfinished work early and improve it through feedback
- Move comfortably between strategic analysis and hands on execution
- Know when to continue investing in an idea and when to stop
- Operate effectively without a detailed playbook
This is not a role for someone who wants months of consensus building, a rigid job description, or a narrowly defined set of responsibilities. It is for someone who learns quickly, takes initiative, enjoys solving ambiguous problems, and wants to help build something from the ground up.
What You Will Do
- Own the month end close across multiple entities, including journal entries, accruals, prepaid amortisation, depreciation schedules, and account reconciliations
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts for the operating companies Onni Capital builds, and keep them consistent with the group structure
- Prepare bank, credit card, and intercompany reconciliations, and investigate and clear reconciling items rather than carrying them forward
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable, manage payment runs within approval limits, and maintain vendor and customer records
- Prepare monthly working papers and supporting schedules to a standard that stands up to external audit without rework
- Support the quarterly investor reporting cycle and the annual audit, including preparation of items on the auditor request list
- Prepare and file GST, PST, and other indirect tax returns, and support corporate tax preparation with external advisors
- Maintain fixed asset registers, lease schedules, and debt schedules
- Support the billing and revenue recognition process for Panni Consulting, including tracked hours, internal preferred rates, and external market rates
- Assist with the setup of accounting systems, banking, expense tools, and approval workflows for new entities as they are formed
- Prepare variance analysis and flag anything that looks wrong before it reaches the Controller
- Use modern AI and finance tooling to automate reconciliation, data entry, and reporting tasks
- Document processes and operating standards so the close can be run consistently and handed over cleanly
What You Bring
- Three or more years of full cycle accounting experience, with ownership of a month end close rather than participation in one
- CPA designation, or active enrolment in the CPA program with meaningful progress made
- Strong technical accounting fundamentals, including accruals, revenue recognition, working capital, and the ability to explain why an entry is correct rather than only that it balances
- Experience with multi entity accounting, including intercompany transactions
- Advanced Excel capability, including comfort building and auditing a schedule from scratch
- Hands on experience with QuickBooks or a comparable accounting system, including initial setup or migration
- Demonstrated ability to use modern AI tools to automate and improve accounting work
- Strong attention to detail, and the discipline to reconcile rather than assume
- The confidence to raise something that looks wrong, including when it originated with someone senior
- Comfort working in a small, fast moving team where the process may not exist until you write it
- High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow through
Nice to Have
- Experience in private equity, fund accounting, investment management, or professional services
- Experience in construction, industrial services, real estate, or technology
- Experience supporting an external audit as a preparer
- Experience setting up the accounting function for a newly formed company
- Exposure to indirect tax across multiple jurisdictions
- Familiarity with tools such as Claude, Linear, Slack, Float, Stripe, or similar platforms
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role is measured by whether the close runs on time without anyone chasing it, and whether the working papers behind it hold up when someone external looks at them.
Within the first 90 days:
- You have taken ownership of the month end close across the entities assigned to you and are running it to a fixed calendar
- Bank, credit card, and intercompany reconciliations are current, with no unexplained items carried forward
- Accounts payable and receivable are running cleanly, with payment runs executed within approval limits
- You have identified at least one recurring manual task worth automating and started on it
Within the first year:
- The close is consistently on time across every entity, with no repeat issues from month to month
- Working papers go to the external auditor and come back without material rework
- Indirect tax filings are accurate and on time across every jurisdiction
- Billing and revenue recognition for Panni Consulting is running correctly, across internal preferred rates and external market rates
- New entities are set up properly at formation rather than cleaned up six months later
- You catch errors before the Controller does, including errors that originated upstream of you
- Enough of the routine work is automated that transaction volume can grow without the close taking longer
- The Controller can be away for two weeks without the close slipping
What Makes This Role Different
You will work across every business Onni Capital builds rather than one set of books. In a single month, you may be involved in:
- Closing the books for a software company, a consulting business, and an investment platform
- Setting up the general ledger for an entity incorporated three weeks earlier
- Reconciling intercompany balances across the group
- Preparing audit working papers that go straight to an external auditor
- Building an automation that removes a recurring manual task permanently
- Sitting in on the accounting integration of a newly acquired business
The expectation is high ownership. The close is yours, and it needs to be right.
