Why This Role Matters
The Learning Design Specialist helps bring Shive-Hattery’s culture of continuous learning to life by creating meaningful learning experiences that help employees grow their skills, share expertise and do their best work. As part of the Marketing team and Shive-Hattery’s broader Knowledge Management and Learning and Development efforts, this individual combines creativity, instructional design and an understanding of how people learn to turn the firm’s collective expertise into engaging development opportunities.
Working in partnership with the Knowledge & Learning Manager, subject matter experts, corporate departments and discipline groups, the Learning Design Specialist develops learning experiences that meet employees where they are and make complex information easier to understand and apply. From technical knowledge and project management to leadership and human skills, this role helps connect Shive-Hattery’s people with the knowledge and resources they need to grow throughout their careers.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop engaging learning experiences that support firmwide priorities, professional development and technical expertise.
- Partner with subject matter experts across disciplines and corporate teams to translate their expertise into clear, relevant and effective learning.
- Apply instructional design principles to determine the best approach for each learning need, including instructor-led, virtual, e-learning, video and other formats.
- Transform recorded sessions and existing resources into polished, accessible on-demand learning, using digital content development tools, visual elements, captions and other techniques to improve clarity and engagement.
- Help develop and continuously improve Shive-Hattery University, the Learning Center and learning pathways that support employee growth.
- Create and curate learning content that makes it easy for employees to discover, understand and apply knowledge.
- Develop and maintain learning opportunities that meet continuing education requirements for licensed professionals when appropriate.
- Partner with the Knowledge & Learning Manager to identify learning needs, develop new programs and strengthen the overall employee learning experience.
- Gather feedback and use participation and engagement insights to continuously improve learning content and experiences.
- Explore new technologies, tools and approaches that make learning more engaging, accessible and effective across the firm.
Requirements

- Associate, bachelor’s or advanced degree in education, instructional design, learning and development, communications or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in instructional design, learning design, education or a related field, with demonstrated experience creating engaging learning experiences.
- Understanding of adult learning principles, learning theories and instructional design models, with the ability to apply them in practical ways.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices and a commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, service-oriented mindset.
- Experience with learning development tools and technologies, including video editing and e-learning authoring tools.
- Ability to take complex or technical information and make it clear, engaging and easy to apply.

This position is primarily performed in an office or hybrid environment and may require travel to project sites, other Shive-Hattery office locations or to meet with clients. A full clean driver’s license is required. The role involves sitting, standing, and working at a computer for extended periods. May also require lifting light to medium weight objects of up to 50 lbs., the wearing of PPE and navigating active construction sites.
