Job Description

The Scientist II role is responsible for resolving manufacturing process problems and improving process efficiency at a Bioprocess manufacturing setting. He/she works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation using scientific and problem-solving tools while following GMP policies and procedures. The role may also provide support for Technical Transfer activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and resolve manufacturing process issues with minimal guidance.

  • Support Manufacturing and Quality Control investigations.

  • Evaluate production process failures and support Non-Conformance Reports and Corrective and Preventive Action Reports within expected timelines.

  • Perform complaint investigations within established timelines.

  • Assess changes to manufacturing processes, test protocols, products, and raw materials, and provide feedback on requirements needed for proper evaluation.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data as required.

  • Draw conclusions and generate experiment reports.

  • Develop experimental test methods, protocols, and sampling procedures with minimal guidance.

  • Evaluate data using statistical tools.

  • Keep track of laboratory results and current developments affecting assigned projects or areas of responsibility.

  • Participate in documenting and implementing manufacturing methods and processes.

  • Support new product transfer and sustaining or manufacturing projects.

  • Prepare and submit SOPs, BOMs, and routings for new products.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain SOPs and logbooks related to troubleshooting, experiment planning, and data gathering.

  • Review and provide feedback on strategies for process and material qualifications.

  • Assist the validation department in developing validation protocols, ensuring validation of equipment and processes, evaluating data, and writing reports.

  • Perform continuous improvement activities, including supporting value stream maps, monitoring projected savings, and identifying opportunities to reduce waste.

  • Support process efficiency improvement and lead-time reduction projects.

  • Apply scientific and engineering principles to execute project assignments.

  • Understand key issues related to ongoing departmental projects.

  • Communicate experimental results to help determine the appropriate course of action.

  • Prepare and deliver functional presentations.

  • Interface with other departments, facilities, and corporate partners to support product development.

  • Prepare presentations, summaries, and reports using standard formats and proper grammar and punctuation.

  • Follow all Waters housekeeping and safety policies and procedures.

  • Perform other related duties and assignments as required.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or other related field

Experience:

  • 3 years’ experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Prior experience with flow cytometry. Proficient in handling infectious biological samples is a plus.

  • Experience developing or improving manufacturing processes for medical devices or pharmaceutical products.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Quality Systems and Operational Process Optimization.

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory practices, statistics, and computer skills.

  • Fully bilingual, English and Spanish.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge and practical ability in a variety of complex laboratory procedures, established techniques, instruments and equipment.

  • Knowledge of process, product and material validations.

  • Proficient with MS office suite. Working knowledge of Minitab or other statistical software is a plus.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including data and results presentation to team members.

  • Effective time management.

  • Knowledge of scientific principles as it relates to defining problems, collecting data, establishing root cause and drawing valid conclusions.
