We are looking for a Senior Staff Buyer to join our team in Costa Rica.

In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the timely and cost-effective procurement of raw materials, OEM components, capital equipment, tooling, supplies, and services while supporting customer service levels and the company’s strategic objectives.

The Senior Staff Buyer will be responsible for balancing cost, quality, delivery, and service in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment. Beyond transactional purchasing, this role requires a deep understanding of the commodities and projects supported to identify opportunities, mitigate supply risks, and create a competitive advantage for the organization.

The ideal candidate will leverage strong supplier management, negotiation, and contract administration skills to evaluate supplier capabilities, strengthen strategic partnerships, drive value, and ensure suppliers consistently meet the organization’s expectations for quality, cost, delivery, and performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Materials & Procurement: Manage complex purchasing activities, including MRP-driven orders, project sourcing, expediting, prioritization, and cost optimization while ensuring material availability and customer service levels.
  • Strategic Sourcing & Supplier Management: Evaluate and select suppliers, obtain competitive bids, monitor supplier performance, resolve issues, and identify opportunities for cost savings and supply continuity.
  • Inventory Management: Manage high-impact and high-value commodities, optimize inventory levels and turns, minimize total material costs, and address excess, obsolete, or expired inventory.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Engineering, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, and project teams to support product development, ensure timely material availability, and align procurement strategies with business objectives.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure purchasing activities and supplier documentation comply with FDA, BSI, and company requirements, while maintaining accurate purchasing master data and approved supplier lists.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Partner with the Procurement Manager to strengthen strategic supplier relationships, ensure business continuity, and support long-term supplier development.
  • Leadership & Continuous Improvement: Manage the most complex procurement responsibilities, drive process and cost improvements, participate in strategic projects, and mentor junior Buyers.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, International Commers, Supply Management, or related field (completed). Master degree (preferred)
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in Purchasing, Procurement, Supply Chain, or Manufacturing.
  • Advanced level of English (B2+)
  • Experience in the Medical Device industry (preferred).
  • Proven negotiation, supplier management, and strategic sourcing skills.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced Communication: Ability to analyze complex business, technical, and regulatory information; prepare reports and business documentation; and effectively communicate with managers, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to address highly complex and non-standard business challenges using sound judgment, creativity, and innovative solutions.
  • Analytical & Mathematical Skills: Strong ability to apply statistical, mathematical, and analytical concepts—including percentages, ratios, probability, and data interpretation—to support business decisions.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Seasoned professional with extensive expertise in a specialized field and comprehensive knowledge of related disciplines, business functions, and cross-functional dependencies.
  • Strategic Judgment: Independently evaluates complex situations, considers multiple alternatives and their business impact, and makes decisions within broadly defined policies and objectives. Solutions may establish precedents for future business decisions.
  • Leadership & Influence: Serves as a trusted advisor and consultant to management, providing expertise on major projects, policies, and business objectives. Demonstrates strong diplomacy and tact when managing sensitive or high-impact situations with senior internal and external stakeholders.
