Your mission

Thousands of companies rely on Checkmk to tell them something is wrong before their users notice. That means two things at once: monitoring infrastructure properly, from operating systems and networks to databases, virtualization and cloud, and building out observability with metrics, logs and later traces for the same admins and SREs.

We are looking for someone to lead that work. You take over a team of three product managers who currently report to the VP Product, you fill the open fourth position, and you sponsor the initiatives that shape monitoring and observability at Checkmk. Your peers are the other Heads of Product.

Are you tired of environments where product managers turn sales requests into tickets? Our PMs talk to users themselves, dig into the technology, and decide what gets built. Protecting that is part of the job.

Leading the team

• Lead and develop three product managers, with one open position to fill now and more likely next year
• Run your own hiring, from role definition to the final call
• Coach product craft: discovery, prioritization, working with engineering, saying no and making it stick
• Set clear goals, give feedback people can use, and handle performance conversations honestly
• Represent your team and its priorities towards engineering, sales, support, and consulting
  
  

Sponsoring the initiatives

• Sponsor the initiatives in your area, the larger product bets we plan, fund and sequence each year
• Carry them from the first problem statement through to adoption after release, not only to the release date
• Stay close to the work: user interviews, discovery, competitive analysis, and using the product yourself
• Work with engineering leadership on scope, sequencing, and what gets cut when a release date is fixed
• Bring evidence from users, the market, and your own data into annual planning

Your profile

• Experience leading product people. Formal line management is ideal, a small team or a strong mentoring track record can work too
• A solid technical grounding in IT infrastructure, networks, cloud, and containers. You can hold your own with engineers and with SREs
• A track record as a product manager or product owner in an agile environment, on products built for technical users
• You work from evidence. You talk to users yourself, and you can explain why you cut something
• Excellent English. German is a plus

No single one is a knockout criterion. Together they describe the technical ground this role stands on, so bring at least one and be ready to pick up the rest quickly:

• Hands-on experience with monitoring or observability tooling such as Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana, or the Elastic stack
• A background as sysadmin, SRE, or system engineer before you moved into product
• A talent for getting into an unfamiliar technology fast, from documentation, a lab setup or an hour with an engineer, and turning it into product decisions
