The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified. 

A. Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Clinical Supervisor and Medical Director, provides and manages direct health care for a specified patient population.

B. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides primary medical care to patients based on the federal standard of 4250 patient encounters per year per 1.0 FTE which averages 21-22 patient encounters per day.
  2. Diagnoses and treats illnesses in children as authorized by their medical license and in accordance with FCCH protocols.
  3. Provides preventive health care to children in accordance with clinic guidelines.
  4. Participates in setting medical and nursing standards and protocols for the health center(s).
  5. Attends provider meetings.
  6. May be a member of FCCH standing committees.
  7. Assists nursing staff with patient triage of telephone calls and questions.
  8. Documents patient encounters and refers patients for further diagnosis and treatment outside FCCH.
  9. Maintains patient problem list and med list.
  10. Available for consultation with Physician Assistants and Family Nurse Practitioners whenever required.
  11. May be assigned supervising physician for Pediatric Physician Assistants and/or Pediatric Family Nurse Practitioner.
  12. May supervise pediatric medical residents and students learning medical practices at the health center(s). Participates in site team meetings.
  13. Works with other providers and nursing staff to provide a team approach to patient care.
  14. Administers medications and injections as required. Supervises qualified Medical Assistants administer and injections of medications.
  15. Dispenses medication in compliance with Board of Pharmacy Regulations.
  16. Participates in clinics for special populations, i.e. diabetes, well child, vaccinations.

Requirements

C. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· State of New Mexico licensed Pediatric Physician required;

· Completion of residency with board certification/eligibility in family practice, internal medicine, or pediatrics preferred.

· Previous training and experience working with underserved populations and

· Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

D. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

· Medical Specialty License or Certification;

· State of New Mexico and Federal DEA Certification;

· Board Certified or Board Eligible in Specified Area of Medical Specialty;

· CPR Certified

E. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

· Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.

· Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.

· Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.

· Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.

· Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise.

· Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.

· Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

· Effective verbal and written communication skills.

· Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

· Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.

F. AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED

· Neonates, infants, pediatric, and adolescent.

G. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS/WORKING CONDITIONS

A person in this position has sufficient time to complete most tasks although under pressure depending on patient and organization demands. There are opportunities to relax from any physical exertion or to change position in work activities.

  1. Physical Effort and Dexterity: Good dexterity to operate personal computer and medical equipment. Position requires moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  2. Machines, Tools, Equipment: Capable of using medical equipment, office machines and personal computers for word-processing and data entry.
  3. Visual Acuity, Hearing, and Speaking: Must be able to read results of medical tests and computer monitor and outputs accurately. Must be able to communicate clearly and accurately for work and safety compliance.
  4. Environment/Working Conditions: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Work is inside a clinic in a controlled environment at multiple health centers working with managers, providers, support staff, and FCCH partners. Normal office and clinic safety precautions and practices are required. Position requires travel throughout the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Work regularly scheduled Monday-Saturday, although weekends may be required to attend meetings and conferences, and meet deadlines, special clinics.
