Scenic Artist

The Scenic Artist is responsible for the visual and artistic finishing of scenic elements, props, sets, and branded installations. You will transform raw materials into polished, high-quality artwork by applying paint, textures, special finishes, and scenic effects. This role involves both shop-based work and onsite execution during event builds and activations.Key ResponsibilitiesInterpret design sketches, renderings, and art direction to produce scenic finishes on set pieces, props, and structures.Apply paint, stains, glazes, textures, faux finishes, metal leafing, gilding, murals, and sculptural elements.Use airbrushing, sponge painting, broom finishes, dry brushing, and specialty techniques to achieve desired effects.Fabricate and apply decorative surfaces, scenic elements, and props in both the workshop and onsite environments.Prepare surfaces for scenic work—sanding, priming, sealing, masking, and cleaning as required.Collaborate with the creative and fabrication teams to refine colors, textures, and finishes.Create mock-ups, test panels, and prototypes for client or creative approval.Work onsite during set installation to apply final touches, touch-ups, and environmental effects.Maintain an organized workspace, including paint storage, mixing areas, and cleanup stations.Mix, match, and create custom paint blends, textures, and finishes that meet the project’s artistic vision.Uphold safety practices when working with paints, solvents, and tools, using proper personal protective equipment.Document work in progress, track material usage, and report needs for supplies or touch-up materials.Troubleshoot finish-related issues and adjust approaches to meet time, quality, and design requirements.QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent; formal training in fine arts, scenic painting, set design, or theatrical arts is a plus.2+ years of experience in scenic painting, set finishing, theatrical production, themed environments, or related fields.Strong understanding of color theory, paint chemistry, materials, and surface preparation.Proficiency in a variety of scenic painting techniques and special finishes.Solid craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a high standard for aesthetic quality.Ability to read and interpret design renderings, color call-outs, and shop drawings.Good physical stamina and dexterity; ability to stand for long periods, work at heights, climb ladders, and handle painting tools.Excellent communication and collaboration with designers, fabricators, and project leads.Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.Willingness to travel and work onsite during installation, including evenings or weekends.Commitment to safety, with prior experience using protective gear and handling painting materials responsibly.Work Environment & ConditionsSplit between workshop (painting studio) and onsite locations where activations are built.Exposure to paint fumes, solvents, dust, and climbing or working on elevated structures.Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, gloves, safety glasses, and other necessary gear.Physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, and long hours.Why Work at BMF?You’ll bring artistic vision to life through large‑scale experiential environments.Work on diverse, high-impact projects—events, brand activations, immersive installations.Collaborate with a talented team of designers, fabricators, and producers.Grow your skills in scenic finishing, creative problem solving, and fabrication.Opportunity to build a portfolio with unique, memorable brand-focused installations.
