Job Summary:


Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs. Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative. Assists with providing safe, age appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures. Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. Able to independently perform job functions. Sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patient for the procedure. Competent to perform and post-process advanced protocols such as: TAVR, Cardiac CTA, Gated Chest, Runoffs, Brain Perfusions, Lung and Heart Screenings, etc. Ability to teach and mentor fellow CT Techs. Functional oversight of the department in the absence of the chief tech. Provides feedback on staff quality of images and patient interaction to Chief Tech and/or Manager.

Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Verify clinician orders for all procedures.

  • Obtain complete clinical history and assess for contraindications.

  • Administer contrast media following established safety procedures.

  • Ensure proper patient identification using two unique identifiers.

  • Confirm correct use of right/left markers and accurate patient labeling.

  • Review CT/radiographic images for diagnostic acceptability before releasing patients.

  • Respond to emergencies and maintain crash cart and life‑support equipment.

  • Assist technologists in other imaging modalities as needed.

  • Monitor patient condition and escalate to physicians when necessary.

  • Protect patient privacy, dignity, and comfort throughout the exam.

  • Apply age‑appropriate procedures, equipment, and communication.

  • Organize schedule and workflow to meet required timeframes.

  • Follow physician instructions during procedures and exams.

  • Demonstrate proficiency with power injectors.

  • Use critical thinking and ask clarifying questions.

  • Seek clarification on ambiguous or unclear orders.

  • Perform and document pre‑procedural verification and Time Out processes.

  • Provide appropriate pre‑ and post‑procedure care.

  • Prepare patients for procedures.

  • Demonstrate proper sterile technique.

  • Maintain competency in venipuncture.

  • Perform and post‑process advanced CT protocols (TAVR, Cardiac CTA, gated chest, runoffs, lung/heart screenings, etc.).

Leadership

  • Maintain workflow to optimize patient throughput and equipment utilization.

  • Communicate employee performance concerns to the Chief Technologist.

  • Manage productivity in alignment with operational standards.

  • Collaborate with leadership on new protocol implementation.

  • Ensure adequate supply levels within the modality.

  • Participate actively in lead and department meetings.

  • Serve as a liaison between Imaging and other hospital departments.

  • Act as first point of contact for employee concerns.

  • Participate in departmental process improvement initiatives.

  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and competency validation for new staff.

  • Support annual competency assessments for CT technologists.

  • Maintain continuous survey readiness for regulatory compliance.

Education & Communication

  • Explain exam purpose and process using AIDET to reduce patient anxiety.
  • Address patient questions, concerns, and contraindications; notify physicians when needed.
  • Participate in training and orientation of new employees.
  • Provide patients with clear preparatory instructions.
  • Ensure documentation is concise, legible, and uses correct terminology.
  • Read and respond to work emails daily.
  • Complete mandatory education requirements on time.

Equipment

  • Adjust technique to ensure lowest reasonable radiation dose while maintaining image quality.
  • Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain equipment per infection control standards.

Quality Control

  • Produce consistently acceptable images based on radiologist feedback and audits.
  • Verify equipment calibration and readiness before each use.
  • Send studies to PACS immediately; print CDs as needed.
  • Scan after‑hours teleradiology reports into PACS when applicable.
  • Complete studies in RIS before marking complete in PACS.
  • Submit teleradiology log sheets when required.

Operations

  • Restock linens and supplies; maintain a clean, orderly department.
  • Transport and position patients safely.
  • Perform patient charging on the day of service.
  • Apply shielding, immobilization, and supportive devices appropriately.
  • Assist coworkers proactively to support departmental efficiency.
  • Perform clerical/support duties when needed.
  • Keep supervisors informed of issues or potential problems.
  • Maintain productivity levels consistent with peers.
  • Operate all CT workstations and manage image transfer to PACS.
  • Maintain compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Teach and mentor fellow CT technologists.
  • Participate in call rotation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Education

  • Completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.

Required Minimum Licenses & Certifications

(All required upon hire unless otherwise noted)

  • ARRT Radiography (ARRT‑R)
  • ARRT Computed Tomography (ARRT‑CT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), which may include:
  • BLS – Basic Life Support
  • ARC‑BLS – American Red Cross Basic Life Support
  • BLS‑I – Basic Life Support Instructor

Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a clinical setting caring for patients (clinical rotations may count).
  • Minimum of 1 year of CT experience.

Required Minimum Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interactions with physicians, patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Ability to obtain, present, and discuss clinical information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ability to explain procedures and provide clear directions to maintain cooperation and goodwill.
  • Ability to function independently and under pressure while contributing to a team environment.
  • Strong customer service skills and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment.
  • Strong prioritization skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask throughout the shift.

  • Compliance with hospital policies, departmental protocols, and professional standards.
  • Competency in all aspects of CT, including patient positioning, exposure factors, and radiation protection.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and pathology and how they affect image quality.
  • Competency in performing all ACR and manufacturer‑recommended Quality Control tests.
  • Ability to perform and post‑process advanced CT protocols (TAVR, Cardiac CTA, gated chest, runoffs, lung and heart screenings, etc.).
  • Ability to teach and mentor fellow CT technologists.
