Description

Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Industria, Inc.

Location: Chicago Area / Project-Based

Schedule: Full-Time | On-Site / Field-Based

Compensation: Competitive; based on experience and qualifications

Lead site safety, regulatory compliance, and prevention efforts on federal construction projects.

Industria, Inc. is a Chicago-area construction firm providing general contracting, design-build, civil, construction management, program and project management, and self-perform services. We partner closely with owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to deliver complex public and federal projects through planning, communication, hard work, and follow-through.

At Industria, every employee is integral to our success. We support balanced lives across work, family, and community while creating a positive environment that values both productivity and teamwork.

The Opportunity

Industria is seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer to manage the daily safety program on assigned projects. You will work closely with project leadership, field supervision, subcontractors, and vendors to plan work safely, verify compliance, document performance, and resolve hazards before they affect people or production.

What You Will Do

  • Implement and maintain the project Accident Prevention Plan and site-specific safety procedures in accordance with contract requirements, EM 385, OSHA, and company standards.
  • Maintain a consistent field presence; inspect work areas, equipment, access routes, and operations to identify hazards and verify controls.
  • Review subcontractor and vendor safety submittals, including AHAs, training records, certifications, lift plans, equipment inspections, and competent-person documentation before work begins.
  • Lead and document safety orientations, weekly meetings, toolbox talks, and other required training or coordination sessions.
  • Prepare complete daily safety reports and maintain organized, audit-ready safety records.
  • Coordinate corrective action for unsafe conditions or behaviors and verify issues are resolved promptly.
  • Partner with the superintendent, CQCM, project manager, subcontractors, and client representatives to sequence work safely without compromising contract requirements.
  • Support incident reporting, investigation, root-cause review, and follow-up actions when necessary.
  • Monitor project activities against plans and specifications to anticipate changing hazards, access needs, and high-risk operations.

What You Bring

  • 5–10 years of construction experience with a general contractor, including site-safety responsibility on federal or public projects.
  • OSHA 30-hour and EM 385 40-hour training completed within the past five years.
  • Current or obtainable OSHA HAZWOPER, NAVFAC ECATTS, and CPR/First Aid credentials as required by assigned projects.
  • Working knowledge of federal construction safety requirements, hazard analysis, inspection, documentation, and corrective-action practices.
  • Strong judgment, punctuality, diplomacy, and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to address hazards firmly and constructively while maintaining productive relationships with field teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure, at remote project locations, and travel or temporarily relocate based on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, construction management, or a related discipline.
  • USACE Construction Quality Management for Contractors certification.

Benefits

  • Discretionary annual bonus based on individual performance and company profitability.
  • Paid vacation beginning at two weeks (10 days) annually, earned under company policy.
  • Group health coverage after 30 days; Industria pays 75% of employee coverage and 25% of family coverage.
  • 401(k) with a 100% company match on employee contributions up to 3%.
  • 10 paid company holidays and three paid bereavement days annually.
  • Company-paid life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability coverage in accordance with plan terms.
  • Company-sponsored outings and educational opportunities.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Industria, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, qualifications, and abilities, without regard to any characteristic protected by applicable law.
