Senior Medical Director, Clinical Informatics

Position Summary

The Senior Medical Director for Clinical Informatics and Healthcare Delivery (HCD) Technology Product serves as the senior physician leader across healthcare delivery technical domains, providing clinical insight and technical expertise to drive end-to-end technology execution and ensure that Epic-enabled solutions advance core business outcomes. 

This role is the clinical expert and trusted physician advisor for teams across HCD technology, driving effective enterprise governance, improving clinician experience, enhancing patient outcomes, and supporting organizational strategic priorities. The Senior Medical Director will also serve as the product leader for two core HCD technology domains - Center Operations and Quality/Stars. 

The Senior Medical Director brings hands-on clinical and Epic build expertise, partners closely with operational and technical leadership across the enterprise to align the Epic roadmap with organizational strategy, has excellent clinical judgement and keeps patient experience, safety, and outcomes at the center of everything we do, and represents the clinical voice in enterprise governance, escalation, and innovation efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Product & Technology Leadership

• Serve as the senior product leader across Clinic Operations and Quality & Stars technical domains, offering clinical insight and technical expertise to drive end-to-end technology solutions that advance care pathways and core business outcomes.
• Lead enterprise-wide Epic optimization efforts to improve clinical workflows, efficiency, quality, and patient safety.
• Work hand-in-hand with clinical/business leaders to translate organizational priorities into Epic workflows, decision support, reporting, and clinician tools across the enterprise.
• Support Epic upgrades, testing, implementation, and change management activities, and serve as accountable clinical sponsor for enterprise go-lives and major releases.
• Monitor adoption and effectiveness of Epic enhancements enterprise-wide and recommend continuous improvements.

Governance, Safety & Stakeholder Partnership

• Participate in enterprise governance committees, serving as a trusted clinical advisor and point of contact on Epic-enabled technology strategy for leadership across business units.
• Partner with physician leaders, operational leadership, and technical teams enterprise-wide to translate clinical and business needs into actionable, prioritized technology roadmaps.
• Present enterprise status, risk, and outcomes to leadership and governance committees as needed.
• Serve as a trusted partner for the Clinical Informatics Safety team, as well as business Safety teams.

Issue Resolution & Continuous Improvement

• Serve as an escalation point for clinical and workflow issues across the enterprise, driving timely and sustainable resolution.
• Identify opportunities to reduce administrative burden and improve clinician satisfaction across the organization.
• Champion standardization, best practices, and evidence-based care across the enterprise.

Innovation & Team Development

• Maintain a current point of view on Epic roadmap releases, industry trends, and emerging tools (e.g., automation, interoperability, AI-enabled workflows), and assess their applicability across the enterprise.
• Mentor and develop clinical informatics team members and clinician-technologists across the enterprise, contributing to bench strength for future clinical informatics leadership.

Qualifications

Required

• Licensed clinician - MD/DO (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Med-Peds), NP, PA in good standing.
• Enthusiastic about remaining in clinical practice (~20% clinical FTE) 
• 10-12 years of relevant work experience.
• High-performing clinician with demonstrated excellence in care model outcomes, patient experience, and teamwork.
• Completion of Epic Builder training and certification (or willingness to obtain within a designated timeframe).
• Minimum 5 years of ambulatory clinical practice experience.
• Demonstrated interest or experience in clinical product, clinical informatics, safety, quality improvement, healthcare operations, or workflow redesign.
• Strong executive presence with experience presenting to and building relationships with senior stakeholders across a large enterprise.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and change management skills, with the ability to effectively partner with clinicians, operational leaders, and technical teams.
• Experience leading projects, quality improvement initiatives, or large organizational change efforts
• Knowledge of value-based care, quality metrics, and patient safety strategies.
• Familiarity with interoperability standards and healthcare regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, Promoting Interoperability).
• Highly accountable and has excellent follow through
• A true problem solver, committed to driving teams toward excellence in a joyful and curious way, even under high stress.

Preferred

• Board Certified in Clinical Informatics
• Experience leading or sponsoring Epic upgrades, optimization initiatives, or major go-lives.
• Demonstrated leadership within the care model, including participation in quality, safety, operational, or provider engagement initiatives.

Time Allocation and Location

• 0.2 FTE Clinical Practice (could potentially consider additional clinical time)
• 0.8 FTE Clinical Informatics Leadership
• Domestic travel approximately 1-2 times a quarter
• Non-travel administrative time is remote

Reports to the Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) for CVS-HCD Technology

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$184,112.00 - $396,550.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
