Job Description

The Epidemiology Specialist serves as a subject matter expert in epidemiology, supporting the investigation, analysis, prevention, and control of communicable, chronic, environmental diseases, and injuries. This role conducts epidemiologic studies, analyzes public health data, develops intervention strategies, and collaborates with healthcare providers, community partners, and public health agencies to improve population health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct epidemiologic studies, surveys, and investigations related to disease, injury, and public health concerns.

  • Analyze surveillance and statistical data to identify disease trends, risk factors, and opportunities for intervention.

  • Investigate disease clusters and outbreaks, including conducting interviews, collecting information, and supporting specimen collection when needed.

  • Develop and evaluate strategies, policies, and programs for disease prevention and control.

  • Maintain surveillance systems and monitor reporting to identify changes in disease incidence and prevalence.

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, community organizations, schools, government agencies, and other partners on public health investigations and prevention efforts.

  • Prepare reports, statistical summaries, grant materials, presentations, and other public health communications.

  • Communicate epidemiologic findings to professional groups, community partners, and the public.

  • Support sentinel surveillance activities and analyze and report findings.

  • Maintain accurate records, protect confidential information, and comply with HIPAA and applicable regulations.

  • Participate in public health emergency response activities as assigned.

  • Identify opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, productivity, and public health processes.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in public health, nursing, epidemiology, or a closely related field.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of epidemiologic principles and techniques related to disease surveillance, investigation, and outbreak control.

  • Knowledge of community-level public health emergency preparedness and Incident Command System (ICS).

  • Strong research, data analysis, statistical, and report-writing skills.

  • Ability to interpret statistical concepts, including probability and statistical inference.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to present information effectively to large audiences.

  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or a closely related field.

  • Two years of progressive experience applying epidemiologic principles and techniques.

  • Experience with data analysis software such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, or R.
