Job Description:
Plan Review Specialist
Purpose:
This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical and specialized duties to ensure compliance with development related application requirements.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Performs a variety of technical work involved in the acceptance, review, and processing of all types of development applications.
Provides application information including quoting and calculating fees and answering questions related to, applicable codes and regulations.
Receives complaints and questions and provides resolution, or refers to appropriate department or staff member for resolution.
Assists in the scheduling of and keeping of records of reviews; keeps records of and provides billings of fees; and ensures proper filing and logging of plans and related documents for the permanent record.
Assists in the development and maintenance of procedure and policy manuals.
Reviews development applications and supporting documents to ensure that all required documents are included in the submittals.
Communicates with development professionals, owners, and general contractors to resolve problems. Answers development related questions from customers, City staff, and other divisions.
Updates and maintains systems records.

Knowledge of applicable City ordinances, policies, codes, permitting, licensing, and related State and Local regulations.
Knowledge of application requirements.
Knowledge of good customer relation practices.
Knowledge of architectural or civil drawing practices, symbols, and abbreviations.
Skill in oral and written communications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Ability to maintain effective communication and working relationships with City Officials, business leaders, financial institutions, developers, citizen groups, and city departments and employees.
Ability to perform analyses to determine compliance with or deviation from applicable codes.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to maintain records.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the job.
Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of computer mapping and graphics technology.
Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret applicable research data and presenting it in a clear and concise manner.

Austin Development Services is seeking a Planner Review Specialist

Meets with members of the public, developers, and other city officials to respond to questions that are relevant to a specific planning area or to planning in general.
Reviews subdivision plats and site plans for compliance with local regulation and ordinances.

Pay Range:
$25.74 - $30.50 per hour

Travel:
If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
Critical Employee:
Critical employees are considered necessary and vital and support activities that impact City or department operations. This work can be done while at a designated work site or while working at an alternate work location. Critical employees who are able to work at an alternative work location are required to do so. Schedules may be modified, and employees may be reassigned to another area during extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to provide essential services.
Hybrid Work Environment:
The City of Austin Telework Program is designed to empower employees and leaders to establish hybrid work arrangements that promote high levels of performance and engagement. The City of Austin has an established work arrangement under which an employee is scheduled to work at least 2 days per week at their designated worksite. Some positions may require additional time at their designated worksite.
90 Day Provision for Additional Vacancy:
If the same or an additional vacancy occurs within the Development Services Department in the same job title within 90 days after the start date of the top candidate, the additional position may be offered to another top candidate from the same candidate pool. This may include filling other vacancies with the same job title in other division/work locations within the City of Austin, Development Services Department. Decisions on assigned selection may be made at the time of hire based on the business needs of the department.
