Job Description:

We’re KSM, one of the top 50 largest independent advisory, tax, and audit firms in the United States. But more than our size, it’s our people and culture that set us apart. We believe great things happen when people are supported, challenged, and given the freedom to do their very best work. That’s why we’ve built a workplace where your career and personal life can thrive together – where you have the flexibility to manage your time, the resources to grow, and a team that genuinely cares about your success.

We’ve been employee-owned since 2001, giving every team member a stake in our collective success. This ownership mentality fosters a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and excellence  – where new ideas are welcomed, different perspectives are valued, and you’re encouraged to explore what excites you most. Whether you’re expanding your skills, tackling new challenges, or making an impact beyond the office, we provide the resources and support to help you grow in the direction that’s right for you.

At KSM, your contributions matter – not just to the firm, but to your colleagues, clients, and the communities we serve across the U.S. If you’re looking for a place where you can do meaningful work, build lasting relationships, and grow in ways that align with what’s most important to you, we’d love to meet you.

Position Summary:

Katz, Sapper & Miller (KSM) is seeking an accomplished Sales & Use Tax Senior Manager to help lead and expand our growing State and Local Tax (SALT) practice. This is an opportunity for an experienced sales tax professional to make a meaningful impact by combining advanced multistate technical expertise with practice leadership, business development, and team development.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to clients, independently leading complex multistate sales and use tax engagements and delivering practical, high-quality solutions to sophisticated technical issues. Equally important, this individual will help shape the future of the practice by strengthening client relationships, mentoring and developing professionals, enhancing processes, championing innovation, and supporting strategic growth initiatives.

We are looking for a collaborative, forward-thinking leader who demonstrates sound professional judgment, intellectual curiosity, and an ownership mindset. The ideal candidate is passionate about building high-performing teams, identifying opportunities to improve how we serve clients, and contributing to the continued evolution and long-term success of KSM's Sales & Use Tax practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage sales and use engagements performed within the SALT Group, and ensure accurate and timely deliverables while providing strategic oversight
  • Exercise sound judgment in managing day-to-day client matters independently while appropriately escalating strategic or high-risk issues.
  • Create an environment where managers, seniors, and staff are challenged, coached, and developed into future leaders through meaningful feedback, delegation, and mentoring
  • Develop and enhance their own technical understanding of SALT specialty areas
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive culture within the SALT practice while strengthening relationships across service lines to increase awareness of SALT capabilities and enhance client service.
  • Serve as Firm technical resource for multistate sales and use tax issues
  • Lead sales and use tax practice initiatives, process improvements, and service offerings.
  • Collaborate across service lines to identify integrated client solutions and expand existing client relationships
  • Champion continuous improvement by evaluating emerging technologies, AI tools, and workflow enhancements that improve quality, efficiency, and the client experience
  • Represent the firm through speaking, publications, and professional organizations.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Keep abreast of SALT developments nationwide; communicate to Firm.
  • Develop and enhance excellent technical knowledge, writing skills and verbal communication skills; interpret, complete and review opinion papers, protest documents, internal technical communications, etc.
  • Perform complex tax research; manage tax research projects; utilize managers, seniors and staff when appropriate.
  • Develop deep understanding of client business and industries to provide solutions to SALT related issues
  • Develop and advise on strategies to minimize sales and use tax burden of clients
  • Assist with business restructuring projects with a significant SALT component.
  • Manage state and local tax audits; demonstrate ability to advocate client positions in audit and other potentially adversarial settings with state and local government officials while maintaining positive relationships with government personnel and directing client communications to set expectations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with peer government officials for assistance with various client issues; develop and maintain relationships with professional colleagues within the tax community.
  • Demonstrate the ability to generate high-quality work under deadlines and within budgets; outstanding ability to multi-task within and outside of the firm and across multiple clients, assignments and staff to meet often tight deadlines
  • Manage the economics and profitability of projects.
  • Become an integral part of the technical and professional development of staff; serve as a formal and informal mentor to managers, seniors and staff.
  • Participate in public speaking on technical topics to internal and external audiences.
  • Embrace and promote technology-enabled service delivery, including AI tools and automation, to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability across the practice.
  • Collaborate with Partners and Directors to expand existing client relationships, identify new business opportunities, develop referral networks, participate in community and industry activities, and contribute to the long-term strategic growth of the practice.

Leadership Competencies:

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong professional judgment and accountability
  • A positive, collaborative leadership style
  • An ownership mindset with a bias toward action
  • Intellectual curiosity and continuous learning
  • Comfort operating in an evolving, growth-oriented environment
  • Ability to develop future leaders through coaching and mentoring
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Entrepreneurial thinking balanced with practical execution and risk management
