SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under general supervision of the Division Manager, or designee, this position provides the opportunity to perform a full range of duties related to the functions of the Department. You will have the opportunity to work on real projects that align with your interests and career aspirations. 

Your role in the group is an important one, your work is taken seriously, and you are counted on as a contributing member of a team. This internship will culminate in the implementation, as practical, and presentation of a final project that will contribute to both the City of McKinney and your academic and professional development. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Assists with researching local, state, and national programs, policies, etc. to ensure our department is at or above standard.
  • Complies with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.

When Assigned to Human Resources
  • Collects data from various sources and formats for tracking and program analysis.
  • Identifies and evaluates training and development needs and effectiveness by conducting needs analysis, analyzing organizational results, job requirements, and current training programs; assesses the transfer of learned information to job performance.
  • Partners with departments to plan for and develop training programs that will address specific workplace needs.
  • Develops a means of measuring the effectiveness of training programs.
  • Assist with developing and administering performance appraisal and management systems/programs
  • Conducts job/work analysis and updating job descriptions
  • Assist with designing and administering surveys such as employee engagement/satisfaction surveys and exit interviews.
  • Loads/scans data in database and help automate processes.

When Assigned to Emergency Management
  • This internship will culminate in the implementation, as practical, and presentation of a final project that will contribute to both the City of McKinney and your academic and professional development.   
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of current planning efforts (i.e., Emergency Management Plan, Special Event Operations Plan, Disaster Recovery Plan, etc.).
  • Assists with special event Command Post and community event informational booth setup and teardown; and works assigned shift(s) during such events. 
  • Assists with maintaining operational readiness of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
  • Assists during severe weather monitoring and EOC activations as assigned.
  • Assists in the coordination of various trainings by supporting course/exercise logistics and delivery, survey development, compiling data from feedback, and after-action report formation.
  • Assists with development and implementation of preparedness and mitigation programs (i.e., City of McKinney Crisis Action Team, Hazard Mitigation Plan, etc.).
  • Assists with preparing a variety of promotional literature for the endorsement of the McKinney Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and KnoWhat2Do disaster education programs.
  • Assists with responding appropriately to citizen inquiries and routes calls to the appropriate City personnel as needed.
  • Assists with recommending supplies needed for operations and researching cost effective alternatives.
  • Works a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays and maintains regular attendance as required.
  • Drives a city vehicle as needed.

When Assigned to Parks & Recreation
  • Assists with collecting site data and developing recommendations to improve our parks system.
  • Assists with planning and marketing programs and special events.
  • Assists in class development, instructor recruitment, class schedule/coordination, marketing and promotions for classes, creating surveys and compiling data from feedback, etc.
  • Assists with preparing a wide variety of promotional literature for the endorsement of our facilities, programs, events, and overall communications for the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Assists with registering program participants, maintaining information by keeping classes, fees, etc. current, inputting new programs, etc.
  • Assists with preparing weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on class registrations, memberships, usage, revenue, etc.
  • Assists with developing, promoting, and coordinating sponsorship opportunities in regard to recreation programs and activities.
  • Assists with responding appropriately to citizen inquiries and routes calls to the appropriate City personnel as needed.
  • Coordinates and/or provides assistance in coordinating tournament scheduling as needed (for Athletics Assignment).
  • Works a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays and maintains regular attendance as required.
  • Drives a city vehicle as needed.

When Assigned to MEDC
  • Assist with research, data analysis, program development and refinement, and other project-related activities.
  • Support business retention, recruitment, workforce development, marketing, events, and other areas of economic development.
  • Work with MEDC staff divisions to support organizational priorities and deliverables.
  • Participate in meetings, activities, and professional development opportunities relevant to the role. 
  • Provide project, administrative, and operational support and perform other duties related to MEDC work. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  •  Strong organization and time management skills.
  •  Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) - preferred.

When Assigned to Parks & Recreation
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) - preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the below Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute.

Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program at an accredited college.

PREFERRD QUALIFICATIONS
When Assigned to Emergency Management
  • FEMA certificate of completion: IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS 100)
  • FEMA certificate of completion: IS-700.B: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
When Assigned to MEDC
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel and/or data management tools.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Interest in economic development, local government, or workforce development. 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (25 pounds).  Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.  Some tasks require visual and sound perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office setting. May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and vision to monitor. May be subject to frequent bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting. There is limited exposure to environmental conditions.

When Assigned to Emergency Management
Incumbents may be exposed to equipment with moving mechanical parts and structures utilized for public safety and CERT training and exercises. Other tasks may involve exposure to outdoor elements such as rain, cold, heat and wind, etc.
