Position Summary

The Enterprise Physical Operations, Infrastructure, Capital Programs & Real Estate (EPO) department at WashU provides integrated operational, infrastructure, planning, and facility services that support the university’s mission of excellence in education, research, patient care, and community engagement.

EPO manages and supports 28 million gross square feet across 235+ buildings and associated infrastructure systems, encompassing academic, research, clinical, residential, administrative, and support facilities across the university’s campuses and operations. Our teams provide strategic leadership and operational expertise in facility management, infrastructure services, capital project delivery, real estate operations, planning, sustainability, engineering, maintenance, environmental services, public safety support, and enterprise operational services.

Responsible for supporting the safe and reliable operation of fire alarms and fire protection systems across campus facilities. Working under guidance, assists with inspections, testing, and basic system upkeep while developing core skills in troubleshooting and system functionality. Contributes to maintaining compliance, ensures accurate documentation, and coordinates work to minimize service disruptions. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication with team members are essential for success in this position.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists in inspection and testing of fire alarm systems.
  • Supports routine maintenance tasks (e.g., draining/refilling sprinkler systems).
  • Performs basic troubleshooting and repairs on fire protection components.
  • Aids in fire pump testing procedures.
  • Documents service activities and communication of findings.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Participates in scheduled training and skills development.
  • Coordinates with internal teams to minimize service disruptions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Works inside and outside, in dusty and dirty places such as pits and equipment spaces where temperatures may exceed 100 degrees, and equipment may be oily and greasy. 
  • Employee may be required to work in the vicinity of labs containing biohazardous radioactive substances.
  • Exposed to wet and cold conditions, as well as noise and vibration from operating equipment.
  • Must be able to work in morgues, gross anatomy and pathology laboratories.


Physical Effort:

  • Typically sitting at desk or table.
  • Typically standing or walking.
  • Repetitive wrist, hand or finger movement.
  • Using tools requiring high dexterity.
  • Occasional lifting (25 lbs. or less).
  • Occasional lifting (25 – 50 lbs.).

Salary Range

$23.37 - $36.19 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
