This role is located at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.

The Enterprise Data Governance Office is seeking an early careers Data Governance Engineer to help expand data literacy, data stewardship growth, governance enablement, and community engagement across General Motors. This entry-level role combines technical learning with business and process support. The Data Governance Engineer will help make governance concepts, learning resources, onboarding steps, and practical guidance easier to understand, find, and apply across technical and business audiences.

Working under the guidance of experienced data governance and data literacy team members, the Data Governance Engineer will support steward onboarding, community growth, training coordination, communications, learning-path development, documentation, reporting, stakeholder follow-up, and measurement. This is an opportunity to gain practical experience in enterprise data governance, data literacy, data stewardship, change enablement, and cross-functional program execution.

The Role

At General Motors, data literacy helps employees understand, question, and responsibly use data and artificial intelligence to make informed decisions. Data stewardship helps ensure that data has clear ownership, useful metadata, appropriate classification, measurable quality, and accountable support across its lifecycle. The Data Governance &

Data Literacy team supports these outcomes through role-based learning, steward onboarding, data transfer documentation/tracking, hands-on workshops, enterprise events, communications, community meetings, reusable job aids, reporting, and governance enablement.

The Data Governance Engineer will contribute to the operating work that turns these activities into a repeatable capability. The role is well suited for a student who enjoys connecting technology, business needs, and practical processes; communicating with different audiences; organizing work; using metrics to understand participation and adoption; and learning how governed data is used across a large enterprise.

What You’ll Do

• Coordinate data literacy events, workshops, office hours, community meetings, and learning campaigns, including calendars, registrations, materials, attendance, and follow-up.

• Help grow the Data Stewardship community by supporting invitations, agendas, discussion topics, feedback collection, recaps, and approved collaboration channels.

• Support Data Steward onboarding, including required learning, Atlan onboarding steps, approved access tracking, cataloging activities, office-hours participation, and follow-up actions.

• Assist with intake and triage of data governance, data literacy, and data transfer documentation; route policy, privacy, access, data-quality, and tool-specific questions to the appropriate subject-matter expert.

• Research and organize content on data governance, metadata, ownership, inbound and outbound data exchange documentation/tracking, stewardship, data quality, responsible data use and analytics.

• Create and maintain plain-language communications and reusable materials, including FAQs, job aids, onboarding checklists, quick-start guides, presentations,

announcements, learning paths, recordings, and documentation.

• Under supervision, help verify approved metadata such as ownership, descriptions, and classifications.

• Maintain metric definitions, source notes, reporting trackers, and simple dashboard quality checks; prepare status updates, dashboard summaries, community recaps, and presentations.

• Coordinate with data stewards, domain representatives, technical teams,

communications partners, learning partners, and governance subject-matter experts while following GM requirements for data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, access, and responsible use of data and artificial intelligence.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Your Skills & Abilities

• Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Management Information Systems, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Computer Information Systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, or a related field.

• Basic understanding of how business processes, information systems, and data support organizational decisions.

• Interest in data governance, data literacy, data stewardship, analytics enablement, responsible artificial intelligence, or related areas.

• Ability to organize information, manage details, follow established processes, and complete assignments on time.

• Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills, including the ability to explain technical or process topics to non-technical audiences.

• Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders and work effectively in a team environment.

• Demonstrated curiosity, willingness to learn, and ability to receive and apply feedback.

• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable productivity tools, including document, presentation, spreadsheet, and collaboration applications.

• Ability to work at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan and

participate in virtual and in-person meetings as required by the team.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage

• Coursework, project work, or internship experience involving data governance, data stewardship, data quality, business process analysis, learning design, communications, community engagement, or program coordination.

• Familiarity with SQL, spreadsheets, data visualization, survey tools, reporting, or dashboard development.

• Exposure to data catalogs, metadata, ownership, classification, data quality, data privacy, data contracts, or lifecycle concepts.

• Exposure to steward onboarding, communities of practice, office hours,

enablement programs, or adoption measurement.

• Exposure to tools such as Atlan, Immuta, Anomalo, Databricks, Power BI,

Confluence, Degreed, Slack, or similar platforms.

• Strong documentation, collaboration, analytical, and communication skills with both technical and business audiences.

Compensation 

The salary range for this role is from $84,900 - $130,500. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
