Under direct supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, the Wastewater Utility Worker I maintains and repairs wastewater collection facilities; operates heavy equipment and tools in a highly skilled manner; and performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Supervision is provided by the Wastewater Supervisor.

Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: (These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. Performs a variety of activities associated with the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of sewer and storm drain facilities and equipment; locates and cleans sewer and storm drain lines, lift station, wastewater facilities, vaults, and other confined spaces; utilizes proper safety techniques and uses equipment in accordance with Cal-OSHA and City safety policies and procedures; operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy-duty motorized equipment and vehicles such as a sewer jetter/vacuum truck, dump truck, pick-up trucks, CCTV for sewer line inspection, and a variety of other hand-held, hydraulic, power tools, and motorized equipment; cleans and maintains tools and equipment used in the field and at the shop; follows safe work practices including but not limited to traffic control, personal protective equipment, hazardous materials, confined space, and electrical safety; and performs other related duties as assigned. Maintains regular attendance.

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:

Education and/or Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required. Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of municipal sewer system infrastructure is desirable.

Knowledge of:
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of sewer and storm drain systems, lift stations, pumps, valves, manholes, and sewer facilities; record keeping and reporting procedures; and safe work practices.

Ability to:
Read and interpret construction plans and specifications; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and understand and communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required. Ability to obtain a valid Class "B" California Driver's License within one year of appointment is required. Possession of a Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance certificate issued by the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) is preferred.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, or more than 75 pounds with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods of time; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.

Work Environment

Employee generally works outdoors. Employee will travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the Selection Process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.
