Description -

The San Diego  (SDAL) Analytical Labs group – located in the MTI-FTI organization – has an immediate opening for a Manager position.  The mission of this group is to use our analytical, materials, and engineering expertise to enable our partners’ success and drive successful development of digital printing technology in both 2D and 3D domains.  The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of  chemists and technical professionals responsible for providing failure analysis, materials characterization, process development support and deep technical insights to the HP project partner base.  It is an expectation of the successful candidate that he or she will have the educational and experiential background to provide oversight within this group in the areas of new analysis technology, advanced analytical method development, and engagement with the HP San Diego materials and process development.


Responsibilities:


  • Manages and controls activities within a single country or a sub-region which is part of a larger geographical Region.
  • Manages at least 4 employees and typically between 8 and 15 direct reports. Span of Control guidelines may differ from these numbers.
  • Align with FTI and project partner management on team goals and projects.  Define team performance and development goals.
  • Oversee workflow management for the group, including developing, maintaining, and responding to operational performance metrics for specific laboratory areas.
  • Contribute to improving HOW we develop products, leverage to other product developments, and share the knowledge generated broadly (i.e. development effectiveness and knowledge management initiatives).
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with all our project team partners, promoting a high level of engagement with technology, product, and process development efforts.
  • Maintain and build a high level of collaboration with other  labs worldwide to leverage capabilities and share technology advances.
  • Foster a dynamic work environment of teamwork, innovation, and accountability for results.  Acquire, develop , and retain the technical staff required to support our project partner needs.  Develop team members to maximize their potential and level of contribution.
  • Perform all the required management duties including:  cascading prioritized goals, department budget management, performance management, salary and rewards administration, and resource planning and execution.
  • Communicates project status and escalates issues to direct managers, program managers, and internal and external development partners
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for process improvement and cost reductions opportunities.
  • Provides people-care management for assigned team members, including hiring, setting and monitoring of annual performance plans, coaching, and career development

Education and Experience Required: 


  • First-level university degree or equivalent experience required. Advanced university degree in either chemistry or materials science strongly recommended.
  • Minimum 5 or more years of related work experience. Experience in a direct people management role is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Strong leadership skills, including coaching, team-building, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrates broad depth of knowledge in chemical and materials technology in general and chemistry and materials science in particular.
  • Applies expertise to the development and application of comprehensive, robust approaches for understanding root-cause failure analysis and materials characterization issues using a wide array of  instrumentation.
  • Exercises significant independent judgment, working within broadly defined policies and practices.  Determines best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives.
  • Leads and/or provides expertise to functional project teams and participates in cross-functional initiatives.  Possesses and shares a strong operational knowledge of the technology base for commercial and industrial digital printing.
  • Works across organizational boundaries.
  • Identifies emerging l technology capabilities and matches them up with anticipated business needs from project partners.
  • Possesses strong teamwork and networking skills
  • Has demonstrated clear and effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills that inform & persuade peers and managers.

Musts:


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical science discipline
  • 2+ years of experience leading engineers or chemists of diverse fields, either in project or program management roles, with demonstrated strong project management planning and execution skills.
  • Ability to lead and develop technical teams and drive for results


The pay range for this role is $130,700 to $205,200 USD annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to United States of America candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
