Location: Puerto Rico (San Juan)
Type of Contract: Independent Contractor — Monthly Retainer, Full-Time Equivalent
Salary Range: Market Rates (negotiable based on experience)

Our client is seeking a skilled Accountant with strong Puerto Rico accounting and tax compliance experience to support their portfolio of foreign-owned and mainland-owned Puerto Rico entities. You will play a key role in monthly bookkeeping, statutory filings, tax compliance, and financial reporting while coordinating directly with clients and external accounting professionals. Your work will directly impact timely regulatory compliance, accurate financial reporting, and the good standing of their Puerto Rico entities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly bookkeeping and maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with US GAAP using platforms such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or Sage.
  • Prepare and file monthly Sales and Use Tax (IVU) returns through SURI and manage related registrations and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare and file annual corporate income tax returns, estimated tax payments, and Puerto Rico informative returns, including Forms 480.6A, 480.6B, 480.6D, and 480.7 series.
  • Manage municipal compliance obligations, including Volume of Business / Patente Municipal declarations and personal property tax filings with CRIM.
  • Coordinate employer withholding and payroll-related filings, including Forms 499 R-1B and 499R-2/W-2PR, and reconcile SINOT, FSE, and unemployment contributions to the general ledger.
  • Prepare annual financial statements, supporting schedules, and monthly reporting packages for foreign or mainland parent companies; coordinate with external auditors or CPAs when required.
  • Respond to Hacienda, CRIM, and municipal notifications, support audits and information requests, liaise with international clients and referral partners in English and Spanish, and maintain organized files against fixed compliance deadlines.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Puerto Rico accounting and tax compliance, preferably within a professional services or outsourced accounting environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code, IVU, informative returns, and municipal tax obligations.
  • Professional fluency in both English and Spanish, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with SURI, CRIM, and Puerto Rico Department of State online platforms.
  • Proficiency with US accounting software such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or Sage.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage multiple client deliverables and fixed monthly and annual deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license in Puerto Rico or a US state.
  • Experience with Act 60 / Act 20-22 incentive decree compliance and annual reporting.
  • Experience supporting global EOR, PEO, or multi-country expansion service providers.
  • Familiarity with US federal reporting requirements affecting foreign-owned entities, including Forms 5471, 5472, and 1120-F.
