Basic Purpose
Under general direction, serves as principal staff assistant to a Commissioner of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (“Commission”).
Typical Functions
- Coordinates the daily activities of a Commissioner’s office, including but not limited to, development, prioritizing, assignment or performance of investigative or research work, and response to inquiries concerning a Commission ruling or various complaints, which fall within the Commissioner’s jurisdiction.
- Provides information to the general public and collects their comments or reactions to current or pending Commission rulings; acts as the Commissioner’s representative at public meetings or to the news media, assisting them in the understanding of processes, rationale, and/or implications of Commission decisions.
- Assists the Commissioner in maintaining contact and coordinating various activities with other State agencies, the Legislature, or other official groups.
- Serves as liaison to the various Commission Divisions or Departments, keeping the Commissioner appraised of activities of a special or continuing interest, staffing, and special situations, which may require administrative action. Represents the Commissioner on various agency task forces, committees, or work groups assigned to administer or develop policies, procedures, or projects.
- Researches Commission records and other resources in order to provide relevant information regarding issues before the Commission, provides analysis and interpretation of evidence or proposals before the Commission, and analyzes or explores alternatives, and drafts decision documents.
Education and Experience
Completion of the curriculum requirements for a Baccalaureate degree in business or public administration, political science, or related fields, and two (2) years’ experience in public relations or another public-oriented position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of effective research techniques, statutes, rules, and regulations, which govern the activities of the Commission; of modern public administration principles and practices; and of the legislative process.
Considerable skills with analyzing problems and adopting an appropriate course of action; communicating research findings both orally and written; establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with others; and effectively presenting Commission determinations or rulings in a clear and concise manner at public meetings.
Special Requirements
Some positions will require that applicants be willing and able to perform all job-related travel.
Additional Job Description
Core work hours for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission are Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm. This schedule may require flexibility based on the needs of the agency.
