Alternative Markets specialized in mono-line and/or multi-line primary programs on either a traditional guaranteed cost (Specialty Programs) or risk-sharing basis (Agency, Association or Group Captives). Alternative Markets focuses on niche programs.

Our Alternative Markets Division is looking for a Senior Production Underwriting Specialist to join our Cincinnati, OH or Windsor, CT office. Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in-office days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Leads the evaluation and underwriting of new and renewal business, ensuring alignment with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.

  • Analyzes complex risk data to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.

  • Collaborates with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and provide guidance.

  • Procures and analyzes supplementary reports and screenings, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections, to support underwriting decisions.

  • Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.

  • Evaluates complex policy renewals and modifications, identifying opportunities for policy enhancements and risk mitigation.

  • Communicates underwriting strategies and decisions effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.

  • Stays updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.

  • Maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.

  • Interprets, explains, and promotes products and services to drive market growth.

  • Leads the development and execution of comprehensive marketing strategies to effectively promote the company’s products to brokers and agents.

  • Analyzes market trends and competitive landscape to identify strategic opportunities for product enhancements and innovative marketing approaches.

  • Leads marketing initiatives, including presentations, industry events, and broker/agent meetings, to showcase the company’s products and services.

  • Monitors and evaluates underwriting and marketing practices, assisting with implementing strategic adjustments to improve overall effectiveness and outcomes.

  • May have responsibility for mentoring newer staff members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field or equivalent experience.

  • Generally, a minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial underwriting. Property expertise is preferred. 

  • Viewed as a senior resource on the Underwriting team. Provides technical advice and support to lower-level positions.

  • Position requires up to 15% travel.

$142,000.00 -$190,000.00
