Position Summary:

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville is accepting applications for an Instructional Designer. This position provides support to instructors and departments in the design and development of courses for all UW-Platteville departments. While the development of online courses for programs in the Distance campus is a large part of this work, the position will also provide design and development support for alternative modality and technology-enhanced courses across the university. The instructional design team collaborates with faculty to create effective, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences that align with educational objectives. As an expert in instructional design, this position will support faculty professional development in teaching and learning, helping faculty to enhance teaching practices, leverage technology effectively, and promote inclusive and engaging learning experiences for students. Working in support of distance and alternative mode courses to create effective and engaging learning environments impacts student learning and retention. As part of the CETL team, this position will work closely with faculty, administrators, and other stakeholders to support and promote online and alternative mode courses across the university in a collaborative environment.

This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit and paid leave eligible position, with a salary of $51,500 per year.

Key Job Responsibilities:


  • Manage multiple course development and revision projects, defining scope and overseeing project timelines.
  • Promote collaboration, partnership and relationships among course authors and stakeholders.
  • Analyze instructional materials to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide training and technical support directly to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and distance learning mediums.
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide creative solutions to varied instructional challenges.
  • Develop engaging educational experiences that can be objectively measured for effectiveness through assessments that are align with stated learning outcomes.
  • Build and develop course content in Canvas in collaboration with course authors, including pages, modules, assignments, assessments, and other instructional materials.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to identify instructional needs and enhance the effectiveness of learning experiences.
  • Design instructional activities that acknowledge and accommodate the diverse needs of learners, showcasing an awareness of cultural and demographic variations.
  • Provide support and guidance in meeting compliance under the Americans with Disabilities Act, including universal course design, copyright issues, and other accessibility considerations.
  • Collaborate with CETL department members to ensure the successful initiation, planning, execution, and completion of faculty development initiatives.
  • Adhere to and advance university standards and procedures for the creation of quality educational products.
  • Promote the use of research in design practices, training content, and evaluation of the effectiveness of outcomes-based learning experiences.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend learning resources, technologies, materials, and processes to support effective learning experiences.
  • Analyze, test, troubleshoot, resolve issues, and provide feedback regarding learning technologies.
  • Design, develop, or recommend multimedia learning materials and collaborate with multimedia service providers to ensure instructional needs are met.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with limited direction.
  • Communicate effectively in visual, oral, and written form and deliver engaging presentations.
  • Serve on departmental committees and project teams as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field.

  • 3-5 years of professional work experience as a full-time instructional designer.

  • 1-2 years teaching and/or online learning experience.

  • Practical knowledge of instructional design methods and practices.

  • Demonstrated ability in interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation skills.

  • Organizational skills to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously in various development and implementation stages while meeting corresponding deadlines.

  • Experience working with a Learning Management System (LMS) (e.g., Canvas, Brightspace by Desire2Learn, Blackboard, etc.).
