Description
Supervisory Status:
Position is responsible for working within turf and fertilizer budgets. Assists Foreman in department employee supervision.
- Assists in supervision of department personnel with an emphasis on turf maintenance.
- Communicates with Foreman on daily tasks.
- Trains capable employees to assist the Turf Specialist as needed.
- Assists citizens with requests for information or complaints.
- Assists and develops capital improvement projects for public grounds.
- Responds to emergency calls, acts as a troubleshooter.
- Assists in the planning, design, repair, and construction of new and remodeled irrigation projects as well as landscaping projects.
- Assists in watering all turf, planting beds and trees on public grounds.
- Assists Irrigation Specialist in maintaining irrigation systems.
- Identifies plant pests and treats as needed.
- Responsible for fertilizing and spraying all plant material and weeds on public grounds.
- Performs daily maintenance of public grounds; including all other tasks that may be required to complete projects.
- Assists in daily tasks on public grounds, including facilities, turf, beds, trees, shrubs etc.
- Applies and maintains knowledge of the current methods, equipment, materials, and tools used to perform maintenance in the Turf Science profession.
- Operates, performs, and assist with the repair and maintenance duties of Park facilities and playgrounds.
- Performs snow related duties.
- Required to be on-call occasionally.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of insects and disease as pertaining to zone seven plant material. Knowledge and ability to perform all aspects regarding proper landscape maintenance.
Education, Certification and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Two/Four-year degree in Turf Grass Management or related field preferred. Valid Kansas Driver’s License required or the ability to obtain one. Possess or obtain valid Kansas pesticide applicators license within one year of employment.
Environment:
Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass, and wood.
Physical Characteristics:
Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 75 pounds and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
