Description
Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal or Project Manager performing complex legal research; preparing draft legal documents, such as motions, briefs, memoranda of law, etc.
- Works with the assigned AUSAs and/or supervisory attorneys to determine applicable administrative statutory and regulatory law, and to identify possible defenses, violations or causes of action.
- 2.Develops an understanding of all applicable federal, state, or local laws and keeps abreast of any new criminal and civil rules and procedures. Alerts AUSAs to all potential issues while conducting reviews and analyzing and interpreting data within the case file.
- Oversees practice with regard to 28 USC §2255 (habeas corpus) and immigration habeas matters including, but not limited to: receiving and docketing same, calendaring due dates, contacting appropriate AUSA/Support Staff regarding locating files necessary to drafting responses; preparing a draft response for review by appropriate AUSA; and attending to timely filing of responses.
- Incumbent analyzes statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases to include those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.
- Supports AUSA by briefing attorneys on pertinent facts, issues and case law.
- Drafts correspondence and legal documents for attorney’s signature.
- Drafts proposed orders for signature of judges and magistrates.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
- Must have a law degree.
- Must have at least two to three years of progressively more responsible experience on litigation support projects including proven capabilities and communication skills to successfully interact with clients and attorneys.
- Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
- Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
- Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging. Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources
- Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be cashed out to the employee on a 1 pay period lag.
Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:
This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
