Description
As an intern in Software Engineering, you will support ING’s Observability Platform by working on SLING, the Service Level Management tool used by thousands of teams across the bank. This internship offers hands-on experience with enterprise software engineering, Site Reliability Engineering practices, and the development of features that improve how teams analyze and explain service reliability degradations.
The team
The Observability Platform provides cross-domain observability tools and data, helping application and platform teams understand what has happened, what is happening, and what may happen across their IT products. Within this context, SLING enables engineers to monitor key reliability metrics such as uptime, success rate, and latency using Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
You will collaborate with engineers, SRE teams, and platform stakeholders to build a new feature that enriches availability reports with correlated incidents and changes, making root cause analysis clearer and reporting more transparent.
Key Responsibilities
Feature design and implementation: Design and implement a smart pop-up selector suggesting relevant incidents and changes based on service and interruption time window.
Backend development: Implement and integrate the backend solution in Java, including the API layer and integration with external systems such as ServiceNow
Frontend development: Develop the frontend in React with filtering, sorting, multi-selection, and structured output generation capabilities.
Reliability and reporting support: Enable manual addition of incidents as a fallback option and help improve how availability reports are enriched, audited, and explained.
Collaboration and presentation: Collaborate with multiple stakeholders, iterate based on feedback, and present your final solution to the Observability Platform and SRE teams.
Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Interest in backend and frontend development, distributed systems, and reliability engineering.
Experience or strong interest in Java, React.js, APIs, and modern software delivery practices.
Curious, analytical, and able to work independently while collaborating with engineers and stakeholders.
Good communication skills and willingness to present technical solutions clearly.
Technology you may work with: React.js, Java, APIs, Kafka, Cassandra, Oracle, Azure pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes.
What We Offer:
Hands-on experience on a live production platform with global usage;
Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering practices in a large enterprise environment;
End-to-end feature development across backend, frontend, and integration layers;
Collaborative, learning-focused environment where your work contributes to improving SLO performance and root cause analysis.
Rewards and benefits
This is a great opportunity to train with highly skilled people who are experts in their field. You’ll do a lot and learn a lot – not only about your specialist area and the bank, but also about yourself and whether this type of environment is right for you.
You’ll also benefit from:
Internship allowance of 700 EUR based on 36 hours work week
Your own work laptop
Opportunity to work on impactful, real-world use cases within ING
Exposure to both data science and banking risk domains
A collaborative and innovative work environment
Guidance from experienced professionals in both risk and data science
During the duration of your internship at ING, it is mandatory to be enrolled at a Dutch university (or EU-university for EU passport holders).
