At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

Job Description

As part of a small, hardworking team of experts, you will be responsible for the development of propellant tanks structures for New Glenn Advanced Upper Stage. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, inventiveness, and dedication to quality to build the road to space. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible engineer for launch vehicle propellant tank secondary structures, components, and installations.
  • Own hardware through the full life cycle: design, analysis, manufacturing, and test.
  • Perform research, develop concepts, and run trade studies to meet performance and cost targets
  • Build 3D models, detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents using Creo and/or Catia V5
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct tests, and review test data
  • Create test plans, specifications, and other documentation for the production of flight hardware at rate either internally or with suppliers
  • Provide manufacturing and production support, including travel when needed.
  • Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget, and technical status
  • Utilize AI tools to automate routine tasks, increase design velocity, and repair bugs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 3+ years related experience
  • A passion for building flight hardware and inventing new technology.
  • Strong understanding of structural design and analysis principles.
  • Strong mechanical design skills using Creo, CATIA V5, or other industry standard software.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct structural analysis using hand-calculation and finite element techniques, using any industry standard software: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer
  • Strong communication skills, with an ability to quickly build consensus among stakeholders
  • Ability to relocate to WA, FL, or CO locations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience on launch vehicles, aircraft, or similar in one or more of the following areas:
    • Design of minimal-mass structure
    • Design of composite structures and structural adhesive bonds
    • Design of cryogenic structures or propellant tanks.
    • Design of baffles, anti-vortex devices, and other propellant management devices.
    • Design of Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) such as spray on foam insulation (SOFI) or multi-layer insulation (MLI)
  • Experience with composite fabrication using automated fiber placement (AFP), Automated tape laying (ATL), or handlayup, including ply by ply designs or NC programming.
  • Experience or expertise with fabrication of riveted sheet metal or machined components.
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for production at rate
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control or MRB
  • Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5)
