Job Description:

This role is responsible for managing the following portfolios:

• Lead portfolio manager for Asia-focused total return portfolios
• Backup/co-portfolio manager for buy-and-maintain strategies for Sun Life general account portfolios

The focus of the role is currently on managing general account portfolios for Sun Life insurance businesses. The role and responsibilities may be broadened or refocused as the business develops, for example to provide investment advice and asset management services to additional Sun Life’s internal and/or external clients.

 

Main Responsibilities

Portfolio Management

• Understand and follow the investment philosophy, operating model and risk appetite of managing Sun Life’s General Account assets and other clients’ (internal or external to Sun Life).
• Manage portfolios in accordance with client’s investment objectives, return targets, risk framework, and performance reporting expectations. Where relevant, make improvements to the existing processes to better cater for client needs.
• Ensure portfolios are at all times compliant with relevant regulations, requirements and guidelines.
• Monitor trade orders and assist in the resolution of trading issues with the trading desk.
• Contribute to monthly fixed income portfolio management and credit research meetings, provide constructive challenge and facilitate improvement to portfolio management and investment research processes across the region.
• Provide regular updates/reporting to various internal committees, help manage and interact with other stakeholders (e.g. operations, legal, risk, compliance, ALM, and Sun Life Corporate or Sun Life Capital Management)
• Maintain relationships with existing clients, including client reporting and queries management, and actively participate in/pitch for new clients or mandates

 

Management of designated total return/benchmarked portfolios

• Manage portfolio performance per the investment guidelines and deliver long term / across-cycle outperformance against the pre-defined benchmark and top one or two quartiles in peer rankings
• Work closely with the credit research and fixed income strategy teams to support/enhance risk adjusted portfolio returns (actively generate relative value trade ideas that can be leveraged by multiple portfolios)
• Establish and manage the risk budget relative to benchmark in accordance to client’s risk tolerance

 

Ad-hoc projects and business development

• Assist the Head of Fixed Income in developing the fixed income investment team and capability
• Work to implement new portfolios and develop new processes and capabilities as the business and client base grows; these are multi-year projects that require commitment and consistency
• Participate in client pitches and business development projects (eg OCIO/LDI), produce model portfolios and proforma analytics to assist RFPs

 

Specialized knowledge & skills

Technical skills

• Demonstrable portfolio management skills, track record of generating consistent performance
• Experience managing internal or LDI portfolios as well as total return/benchmarked strategies
• Deep understanding of the Asian Investment Grade Fixed Income universe will be a plus
• Deep and up-to-date knowledge of Asia and US public bond markets and macro-economic environment
• Build strong relationships with existing clients and actively participate/pitch for new business development
• Proficient in usage of trading and portfolio management systems (e.g. Bloomberg and Aladdin)
• Familiarity with Insurance and MPF regulations in Hong Kong, and across other Asia jurisdictions is a plus
• Experience with interest rates and foreign exchange derivatives hedging and trading strategies is a plus
• Familiarity with institutional investment operational procedures such as cash management, broker selection, and fair allocation for both fund and segregated mandates is a plus

Education and experience

• A degree in Business / Economics / Finance / Accounting or related discipline is expected
• Professional qualifications such as Chartered Financial Analyst or accounting designation preferred
• Minimum 7 years’ experience in portfolio management, with focus on Asian Fixed Income and/or Credit
• Relevant SFC license will be expected, and licensing requirements must be complied with at all times
