The Environmental Maintenance Worker is responsible for the maintenance of stormwater infrastructure, trees/vegetation, outlots, prairies, natural areas/open space, easements, and public right-of-way, including streets, sidewalks, and trails, with guidance from the Street Maintenance Lead worker and the Environmental Resources Technician.Operates maintenance equipment used in the maintenance and/or repair of city stormwater facilities, outlots, right-of-way, streets, sidewalks, and trails.
- Operates street sweepers to clean streets.
- Operates vactor/jetter truck to clean stormwater structures and pipe.
- Operates skid loader and mini excavator in the repair and maintenance of stormwater facilities.
- Performs right-of-way maintenance including mowing, weed removal, and tree removal and/or trimming to assure proper clearances above streets and sidewalks, visibility, safety, etc.
- Sets up safety barriers, cones, or safety equipment in and around work sites.
Maintains city stormwater systems and assists environmental staff on projects and programs, including documenting the completion of work via online forms and GIS for annual reporting to the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
Performs maintenance of raingardens, detention/retention basins, urban forest, waterbody/sensitive area buffer strips, native vegetative, easements, catch basins, pretreatment structures, hydraulic control structures, and storm sewers.
Detects and reports illicit discharge sources to Environmental Resources Technician; inspects priority or high-risk areas where potential or historical sources of stormwater pollution exist. Assists in investigation and response to suspected and reported illicit discharges.
Plows City-maintained streets, trails, and parking lots, respond to emergency call-ins on a rotating basis, and works alternative hours as needed and assigned.
Performs various other duties such as traffic control, roadkill removal, city building/property site maintenance, or other related duties, as needed.
Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Assists other departments and divisions in performing maintenance tasks as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent, plus at least three (3) years of related education and/or work experience.
A valid driver’s license
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
Ability to obtain one or more Minnesota Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License(s) and Erosion Control Certification within 12 months of hire.
Other certifications may be required after hire.
Desired Qualifications:
Minnesota Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License Categories “A”, “E”, and “J”.
Erosion control certification from the University of Minnesota for Construction Site Management.
Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, plans, and GIS applications.
Experience with GPS and basic survey equipment.
Knowledge of principals and practice of urban stormwater management, urban forestry, natural resources management, and plant species identification. Work Environment:
Working in and around high-volume and high-speed traffic, bodies of water, hazardous chemicals, inclement weather conditions, hot and cold temperatures, noise, dirt, dust, fumes, slippery roads, and heavy lifting. Work may involve working in confined workspaces and the use of safety equipment. Duties of the job may involve some occasional disagreeable interactions.
Physical Job Requirements:
Employee will be required to continuously stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands/fingers dexterously; occasionally sit, climb, stoop, and crawl; and frequently talk, listen, and hear. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
