JOB SUMMARY

The Volunteer Coordinator supports The Road Home’s mission by recruiting, organizing, and supervising volunteers who contribute time, talent, and resources to our programs and services. This role partners closely with agency departments to understand their volunteer needs, develop clear and meaningful volunteer roles, and ensure a positive, mission-aligned experience for all volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for coordinating volunteer activities, creating job descriptions, and providing training and support for ongoing volunteer positions. This role builds and maintains a comprehensive system for enrolling, tracking, and recognizing volunteers, as well as recording donated time, services, and goods. The ideal candidate is highly organized, people-centered, and committed to fostering strong community engagement in support of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinating Volunteers  

  • Recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers for agency programs and events. 

  • Supervise volunteers participating in special projects, including organizing, cleaning, and other facility-related tasks. 

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records using the volunteer database, including enrollment, hours served, and donated goods/services. 

  • Prepare monthly reports summarizing volunteer activity, hours, and contributions. 

  • Coordinate, organize, and facilitate large-scale volunteer groups (50+ individuals) across shelter and housing locations. 

  • Collaborate with program directors and staff to identify volunteer needs and ensure volunteers recruited by staff are properly enrolled and supported. 

  • Supervise daily volunteer activities, including volunteers serving meals to shelter guests. 

  • Actively supervise and engage with volunteers during meal service and coordinate with the Kitchen Manager to ensure smooth operations. 

  • Address volunteer behavior concerns and implement appropriate disciplinary actions, following agency guidelines. 

  • Provide comprehensive orientation for all incoming volunteers, ensuring understanding of roles, expectations, and trauma-informed practices. 

  • Attend mandatory agency trainings, including Trauma-Informed Care, Housing Focused services, De-escalation, Suicide Prevention, CPR, and more. 

  • Participate in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as required. 

  • Follow all agency protocols for security, safety, and sanitation to maintain a clean and secure environment for guests and staff. 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance as an essential function of this position. 

Community Networking  

  • Serve as the agency’s primary contact for in-kind donation needs and inquiries. 

  • Speak publicly to community groups, businesses, faith organizations, and other partners about The Road Home’s mission and volunteer opportunities. 

  • Coordinate and lead tours of shelter facilities for community groups, donors, service clubs, businesses, and others. 

  • Represent the agency in interactions with media representatives, elected officials, community groups, and partner organizations. 

  • Coordinate and supervise Eagle Scout projects and court-mandated volunteer placements. 

  • Serve on the Services Committee by connecting committee members with meaningful volunteer activities. 

  • Partner with the Development Team on community engagement and public relations initiatives as appropriate. 

  • Coordinate in-kind donation drives and agency-wide donation events.

  • Actively engage with and honor the unique backgrounds, identities, and experiences of all individuals we serve.  

  • Advance the agency’s commitment to honoring diverse ethnic and cultural heritages through daily actions that foster genuine belonging.  

  • Implement Housing Focused principles, risk management strategies, and high-access services as foundational to our mission. 

  • Maintain healthy boundaries using trauma-informed approaches in all interactions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 
  • Experience working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations is preferred. 

  • Two years of experience in community service, volunteer coordination, customer service, or another role involving regular interaction with the public, volunteers, and staff is preferred. 

  • Lived experience, work experience, or volunteer experience related to homelessness, social services, or community engagement is preferred; or a degree in a related field.  

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Knowledge of volunteer engagement principles and the ability to understand the expectations of various agency programs. 

  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer activities and training. 

  • Ability to speak confidently and professionally to groups of various sizes, including community organizations, faith-based groups, businesses, and volunteer teams. 

  • Ability to navigate interactions with media representatives, elected officials, community groups, and other external partners with professionalism and clarity. 

  • Knowledge of community resources and the ability to elicit support for the agency’s programs through outreach and relationship-building. 

  • Ability to train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate volunteers in a supportive manner. 

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to learn in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 

  • Valid Food Handler’s Permit, or willingness to obtain one.  

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations. 

  • Provide thoughtful and attentive customer service by communicating clearly and handling difficult situations with professionalism, patience, and empathy.  

  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to quickly learn and use various software programs, websites, and applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva (flyer creation/editing), Galaxy Digital, volunteer management databases, background screening platforms, and Outlook. 

  • Ability to accept supervision, direction, and feedback with openness. 

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, coworkers, and supervisors using verbal and written communication. 

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.  

PHYSICAL AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 25 pounds. 

  • Ability to sit, stand, and move for at least two hours at a time or more.  

  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, twist, push, and pull to perform job functions. 

  • Ability to use stairs or steps. 

  • Wear OSHA-required protective gear for safety.
