Job Description – WORKSHOP ASSISTANT

 

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

 

To assist the artisans in carrying out repairs to shipping containers.

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

 

1. Assist Artisan/Operator with repairs of shipping containers. -

• The incumbent must ensure clear understanding of what work is to be carried out.
• Setting up to perform required repair making tools and materials available as per instruction.
• Assist in the preparation of damaged area, measurements, marking off, removal of foreign material and pre-repair cleaning.
• Painting /Spray painting
• Be vigilant while artisan is working in compromised position and or while working with protection masks.
• Artisan/Operator checking and monthly reporting to Dept. supervisor

 

 

2. Carry out minor repairs under supervision.

• Incumbents would carry out minor repairs under supervision of the Artisan/Operator

 

 

3. Electric and hand tool operating and care.

• Angle grinder grinding, sanding, cutting and drilling. Hand tools, wrecking bar, rivet gun, hammers, chip hammers, screw drivers paint brushes calking gun etc.
• Artisan/Operator checking and monthly reporting to Dept. supervisor

 

 

4. General maintenance.

• Yard, immediate working area, tool machinery and equipment cleaning and safe storage
• General maintenance
• Reporting from the artisan and or supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

 

Grade 12 / Matric

 

The following experience is preferable:

• Safe handling of small power tools

 

 

 

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions. Ability to write simple correspondence.

 

 

 

REASONING ABILITY:

 

Basic Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

 

This is due to the nature of the workshop operation, equipment and heavy moving container handling machinery.
