Overview

The Barista is responsible for preparing and serving high-quality coffee, specialty beverages, and light food items while providing exceptional guest service in a fast-paced environment. This position creates a welcoming atmosphere for guests, processes transactions accurately, maintains cleanliness and food safety standards, and contributes to outstanding guest experience by delivering prompt, friendly, and efficient service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.
  • Six (6) months of previous work experience required.
  • Previous barista, food service, hospitality, customer service, or retail experience preferred.

Responsibilities

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

 

COMMUNICATION:

  • Makes efforts to keep informed of company information and communications by reviewing property bulletin boards, digital signage, and company newsletter.
  • Effectively communicates concerns and information to supervisor and listens to communication from supervisor.
  • Effectively relates ideas for improvements to supervisor and management in accordance with chain of command.
  • Observes and reports all unsafe behavior displayed by internal and external guests.

DEPARTMENT OPERATIONS:

  • Greet and welcome guests in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Take food and beverage orders accurately, paying close attention to guest preferences and special requests.
  • Prepare and serve coffee, espresso-based beverages, teas, and other menu items according to established recipes and quality standards.
  • Serve beverages and prepared food items promptly while ensuring exceptional guest service.
  • Provide exceptional guest service by greeting guests, answering questions, and addressing concerns professionally.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems and handle cash and credit card transactions accurately.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the café, equipment, dining areas, and workstations.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure a seamless guest experience.
  • Maintain knowledge of menu offerings and amenities to assist guests.
  • Adhere to all company policies.
  • Ensure an adequate supply of clean cups, mugs, plates, utensils, and serving materials throughout each shift.
  • Monitor inventory levels and restock products and supplies as needed to support daily operations.
  • Inspect coffee brewing and beverage preparation equipment to ensure proper operation and promptly report maintenance or repair needs.
  • Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, health, and company policies and procedures.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and daily operational duties as assigned.
  • Performs all other related and compatible duties as assigned.

GUEST SERVICE:

  • Provides excellent internal and external guest services, always treating internal and external guests with courtesy and consideration.
  • Cooperates and communicates with all fellow employees, always exhibiting mutual respect and consistently projecting a positive, helpful image/attitude.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE:

  • Follows all federal, state, and local occupational safety and health regulations (OSHA standards).
  • Complies with food safety, sanitation, and hygiene regulations when preparing or serving food and beverages.
  • Maintains a safe environment for guests, staff, and business partners reporting hazards promptly.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Read Company or departmental reports, newsletters, and documents.
  • Must obtain and maintain any food handler permits or certifications required by applicable law or company policy.
  • Ability to obtain alcohol service certification if the location serves alcoholic beverages.
  • Knowledge of coffee preparation techniques and beverage presentation.
  • Ability to operate espresso machines, grinders, and beverage equipment.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume environment.
  • Conflict resolution and guest recovery skills.
  • Perform routine and complex mathematical computations.
  • Protect the Company’s value by keeping information confidential.
  • Perform assigned tasks under limited supervision. Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with managerial staff, co-workers, guests, and the public. Work well alone or within a team.
  • Communicate information and suggestions in oral and written form. Prepare written documents and complete reports as required.
  • Utilize computer with an entry skill level.
  • Exercise reasonable judgment and seek guidance for decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job duties and responsibilities.
  • See problems and avoid situations that could be deemed illegal or represent a safety hazard to fellow employees or guests.
  • Respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, guests, regulatory agencies, and others.
  • Occasional travel between company properties may be required.
  • Maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to performance of assigned duties.
  • Must maintain a professional attitude and appearance that positively represents the business.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; attending expos or conventions; and developing or maintaining professional networks. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee is also regularly required to stand for extensive periods of time, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to sit, stoop, kneel, crawl, balance, or crouch while performing duties.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Ability to use arms to reach and lift above shoulders.
  • Must have normal auditory and good verbal communication.
  • Standing for up to 8 hours or more per shift.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of beverage supplies.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, twisting, and repetitive hand motions.
  • Ability to lift upwards of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to drag, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is typically performed within a coffee shop setting.
  • Work is performed with frequent interaction with the public.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on operational needs.
  • The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.
  • The employee may be exposed to chemicals and hazardous material.
  • The employee may be exposed to risks associated with the use of tools/machinery.
  • The employee may be exposed to risks associated with travel between properties and back and forth to other areas as may be required due to business demands.
