Pay range: $34.62-$48.83 per hour. (Candidates without prior law enforcement experience will be hired at the starting rate, while lateral transfer candidates may be placed within the pay range based on relevant experience.)Lateral transfers are encouraged to apply and will be given priority review with potential for an accelerated recruitment and onboarding process.

- Patrols assigned areas to deter criminal/unlawful activity, identify safety concerns, and remain visible and accessible to the community.
- Observes traffic, enforces traffic laws, and addresses roadway safety concerns.
- Performs investigations of crimes and traffic crashes. Gathers and evaluates information and takes appropriate action.
- Prepares accurate and complete reports related to calls for service, patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, and other police activities.
- Responds to calls for service and public and domestic complaints including people in crisis. Uses communication, de-escalation, mediation, and sound judgment to stabilize situations, protect life and property, and take appropriate enforcement action.
- Responds to telephone and walk-in requests for assistance and connects individuals with appropriate services or resources.
- Builds community relationships through public presentations and engagement. Works collaboratively with residents, businesses, and community partners to identify and address recurring concerns.
- Serves subpoenas and warrants, issues citations, and makes arrests as appropriate.
- Gives testimony in court.
- Collects, preserves, and submits evidence.
- Assists Fire Department personnel and other agencies as needed. Collaborates with public safety, behavioral health, and social service partners to address community needs. Patrols special events as assigned.
- Attends roll call.
- Trains Patrol Officers as required.
- Participates in mandatory training.
- Carries, qualifies with, and maintains a firearm.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of an Associate Degree or 60 college credits from an accredited college or university by December 31, 2026. (Candidates who have not graduated from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Academy are required to possess a minimum of 40 credits from an accredited university, college, or technical school. The 60 credit requirement may be reduced or waived if the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board grants an official waiver in accordance with their established policies and procedures.)
- 18 years of age or older.
- U.S. citizen with no felony convictions.
- Valid driver's license and excellent driving record.
Must have acceptable personal and professional history as determined by successfully completing a background investigation.
Candidates must the education requirement by December 31, 2026. All other criteria must be met at the time of application in order to be considered.
- Good knowledge of the principles, methods, priorities, and techniques of police work. Good knowledge of departmental rules and regulations. Good knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances including federal, state, and local. Good knowledge of the streets and locations within the City. Knowledge of the methods of interviewing and interrogation, presenting evidence and what constitutes admissible evidence.
- Considerable skill in the use and care of firearms and in the operation of motor vehicles. Working skill in the application of modern principles and practices utilized in general police work. Working skill in reacting quickly and calmly in emergencies. Working skill in expressing oneself clearly and concisely. Working skill in active listening, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, community members, and partner organizations. Ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds and life experiences, treat people with dignity and respect, and exercise sound judgment, discretion, and authority. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to accept feedback and adapt to changing circumstances. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the following activities:
- Lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds.
- Occasionally lifting and carrying in excess of 75 pounds with assistance.
- Must be able to hear and have correctable vision.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping and running.
- Ability to run, grapple to help physically control another person, climb, reach, apply leverage from unusual positions. Ability to enter cramped and difficult to enter spaces, with low visibility and unknown dangers.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to cold, heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
- Ability to climb stairs and work at heights above 10 feet.
- Ability to drive an emergency vehicle.
- Ability to safely handle department firearms.
