Position Overview

This is an open-rank position. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Professional Counselor I, II, or III based on education, licensure, clinical experience, and demonstrated qualifications.

 

Under general supervision, the Professional Counselor provides competent mental health counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, outreach, and wellness programming to university students. The counselor works with individuals and groups, addressing personal, academic, career, alcohol and other drug, and mental health concerns. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate and confidential clinical records, administering and interpreting psychological assessments, providing consultations and referrals, and managing the organizational and administrative aspects of assigned cases.

 

Depending on rank and experience, the counselor may provide supervision and training to graduate students, practicum students, interns, and early-career professionals; assist with the coordination and development of counseling services and programs; contribute to research and assessment activities; and serve as a professional resource to the campus community. This position participates in an after-hours on-call crisis rotation and requires strong clinical judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to respond effectively to urgent and crisis situations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Counseling Services

  • Provides multiculturally competent mental health counseling and crisis intervention to individuals, couples, and groups.
  • Provides academic, career, alcohol and other drug, and personal counseling services to students.
  • Maintains timely, accurate, and confidential clinical records in compliance with professional ethical standards, state licensure requirements, and departmental policies.
  • Administers and interprets psychological assessments, inventories, and screening instruments as appropriate.
  • Makes referrals and coordinates care with campus and community resources.
  • Manages organizational and administrative aspects of assigned counseling cases.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, students, parents, and community partners regarding student mental health concerns.
  • Seeks and provides professional consultation regarding complex clinical cases.

Training, Supervision, and Professional Development

  • May provide supervision, training, and mentorship to practicum students, graduate assistants, interns, provisionally licensed professionals, and other trainees.
  • May review recorded counseling sessions and provide feedback, case consultation, and clinical training.
  • May provide adjunct supervision for master's and doctoral students in counseling, counseling psychology, social work, or related disciplines.
  • May provide training seminars and professional development opportunities for early-career professionals.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain licensure and professional competency.

Community and Campus Collaboration

  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with campus departments and community organizations.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of partnerships that support student well-being and mental health.
  • Participates in departmental, divisional, and university committees, meetings, and initiatives.
  • Serves as a professional resource and expert consultant for mental health-related concerns.

Outreach, Prevention, and Education

  • Provides presentations, workshops, and educational programming for students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Assists with the development, coordination, and delivery of psychoeducational and wellness initiatives.
  • Responds to requests for information regarding counseling services, programs, organizational structure, and policies.
  • Develops and disseminates educational materials related to mental health, wellness, and student success.
  • Provides professional presentations at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops.
  • May be required to participate in evening presentations and special events.

Crisis Response

  • Provides crisis assessment and intervention services.
  • Participates in an after-hours on-call crisis rotation.
  • Consults with campus stakeholders regarding students experiencing mental health crises.
  • Serves as a resource regarding crisis management and intervention strategies.

Research, Program Development, and Administrative Support

  • Engages in applied research, assessment, and program evaluation activities.
  • Publishes and/or disseminates research findings and evaluation results, as appropriate.
  • Assists with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of counseling services and programs.
  • May assist in the development of new counseling programs and initiatives.
  • Assists with organizational and administrative functions of the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Professional Counselor I

  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Completion of a counseling practicum, internship, field placement, or other supervised experience relevant to college counseling or mental health services.
  • Eligibility for professional licensure in the State of Texas, including successful passage of the applicable licensing examination (e.g., National Counselor Examination [NCE]).

Professional Counselor II

  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Current independent licensure in the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or other appropriate mental health credential.
  • LPC candidates must have completed at least 3,000 clock hours of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in no fewer than 18 months.
  • LMFT candidates must have completed 3,000 clock hours of full-time post-licensure clinical experience in no fewer than 24 months, including 200 hours of supervision.
  • LCSW candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience with 100 hours of supervision and successfully passed the applicable state licensing examination.

Professional Counselor III

  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Current independent licensure in the State of Texas as an LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or other appropriate mental health credential.
  • Five (5) years of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in a college counseling center or other relevant clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with clinical leadership, supervision, training, program development, outreach, consultation, or other advanced professional responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of post‑graduate clinical experience in a university or college counseling center
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and participating in after‑hours/on‑call rotations
  • Experience working with wide-ranging student populations, including first‑generation students, veterans, and historically underrepresented groups
  • Experience conducting outreach, psychoeducation, and wellness programming

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Clinical competency in providing counseling services to individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and experiences.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
  • Adherence to ethical principles and state laws

Additional Information

A federal proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, imposes a $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Texas A&M University-Kingsville will not pay this fee.
