Description
The successful candidate will possess knowledge of standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards, and safety precautions of the trade as well as computer and technical skills including using diagnostic equipment and engine/transmission programs. The successful candidate will also be self-directed and possess strong project management skills.
The City supplies all necessary tools.
Work Schedule: Option of either Monday - Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or Tuesday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., plus additional hours as needed to perform core Public Works duties. A schedule of five 8-hour shifts Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. also available if preferred.
Starting Rate: $34.33 - $37.35 per hour dependent upon qualifications.
No residency requirement.

- Oversees and/or performs and assists in a full range of mechanical maintenance and repair of all Public Works equipment and vehicles, including overhaul work on trucks, graders, tractors and other off-road equipment. Ensures repairs and maintenance complies with DOT regulations.
- Manages work flow and schedules, assigns, and reviews Mechanics' work activities. Coordinates shift work activities with other City departments and various vendors and dealers.
- Ensures all repairs are completed consistent with industry/manufacturer standards. Mentors and trains other mechanic, coordinates training and checks work.
- Oversees and/or performs and assists in welding and mounting of snowplows and other seasonal equipment. Repairs hydraulic, electrical and fuel injected systems.
- Operates all Public Works equipment and electronic test equipment such as multi-meters, computers, and self-test equipment.
- Handles telephone and radio communications with mechanics, supervisors, and vendors.
- Initiates and reviews work orders on computer generated program and determines work priorities. Monitors costs and billable items.
- Creates weekly reports of all shop activity and repairs.
- Performs shop and tool inventory and maintenance. Ensures that equipment is in good working order.
- Assists with vehicle inspections and interacts with manufacturers and vendors regarding warranty programs and repairs as needed.
- Evaluates processes and recommends improvements for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Associate Degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanics or related field.
- Five years' experience as a lead mechanic in heavy truck and off-road equipment.
- Previous experience in commercial welding/fabrication and/or certification desirable.
- Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement, and good driving record.
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, equipment, tools, hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Considerable knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel engines and welding techniques, and hydraulic, fuel injected and electrical systems.
- Skill in reading and interpreting hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials. Skill in diagnosing defective equipment, performing complete engine, transmission and related vehicle component overhauls.
- Ability to install, repair and maintain specialized parts including necessary field repairs and operate department equipment for maintenance. Ability to proficiently utilize a computer and the required software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and employees. Ability to plan and schedule work as well as prioritize workload. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work the required hours of the position.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team-oriented environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to perform the following activities:
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Lifting and carrying in excess of 50-100 pounds occasionally.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping.
- Occasional crawling.
- Ability to focus on projects for long periods of time.
- Ability to reach, climb aerial ladders, apply leverage from unusual positions and to work on creeper under vehicles.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
