Position Summary:
The Teaching Assistant for FMED 611: Healthcare Systems, Policy and Performance will support a graduate-level course focused on critical analysis of healthcare systems, with emphasis on primary care in Canada, and comparative global settings (coursecatalogue.mcgill.ca). Responsibilities include quiz development, attendings selected classes to support discussions and small-group activities, providing feedback on assignments and presentations, assisting with grading and course administration, and helping create an inclusive learning environment. The TA should also be available to provide student support or information as needed. Periodic meetings with the course instructor will be organized to review course progress, student needs, grading expectations, and any issues arising during the term. The position is best suited to a graduate student with interests in health systems, primary care, health policy, equity, or global health.
Key responsibilities
The Teaching Assistant will:
Support preparation of weekly course materials, including slides, readings, discussion questions, case examples, and online learning resources.
Attend selected classes and assist with facilitation of seminar discussions, small-group activities, and student presentations.
Help students engage critically with health systems concepts, including primary care organization, policy processes, health system performance, evidence-informed decision-making, and comparative health systems analysis.
Provide timely feedback on student assignments, presentations, participation, and written work, using rubrics developed with the instructor.
Hold office hours or provide individual/group support to students as needed.
Assist with course administration, including communication with students, tracking submissions, maintaining the learning platform, and supporting grading records.
Contribute to creating an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually engaging learning environment.
Meet regularly with the instructor to review course progress, student needs, grading expectations, and any issues arising during the term.
Preferred qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
Graduate-level training in family medicine, public health, health policy, health systems research, global health, epidemiology, implementation science, or a related field.
Familiarity with primary health care systems, especially in Quebec/Canada and/or comparative international contexts.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Experience reviewing academic literature and providing constructive feedback on student writing.
Ability to facilitate discussion among students with diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds.
Strong organizational skills and reliability in meeting deadlines.
Prior teaching, facilitation, or TA experience is an asset.
Expected workload:
The workload will include preparation, class support, student communication, grading, and meetings with the instructor. Specific hours and responsibilities will be finalized according to departmental requirements, course enrolment, and the assigned TA contract.
Desired Major(s):
Current graduate students in family medicine, nursing, health policy, health systems research, global or public health, or a related field.
Desired Degree Level:
Masters & Grad Dips & Certs.
Current MSc or PhD students
Qualifications:
Familiarity with primary health care systems, especially in Quebec/Canada and/or comparative international contexts and/or a former student of FMED 611, are assets.
Strong organizational skills and experience providing timely, constructive feedback.
Prior teaching, facilitation, or TA experience is preferred.
Must be eligible to work in Canada. English required (French is a plus).
