Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN VI (Gas Turbine Engines) with U.S. Navy shipboard experience to provide full-time support for U.S. Naval shipboard equipment at the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) in San Diego, CA.

In this role, you will be part of a waterfront team that provides direct engineering and technical support to the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet, helping keep shipboard systems reliable and mission-ready. Working alongside Navy personnel aboard ships and at regional maintenance facilities, you will apply your technical expertise to troubleshoot equipment, support maintenance and assessments, and train Ship's Force to improve Fleet self-sufficiency and readiness. This is an opportunity to contribute to a high-impact mission that directly supports the safety and combat readiness of our Fleet.

This position is contingent upon contract award, anticipated for February 2027.

Typical Responsibilities: The candidate’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to) performing or supporting the following actions:
  • Provide Full-Time Onsite Support as well as Surge Support as tasked for the following Code 261 cognizant equipment.
  • Complete Marine Gas Turbine Inspections for Gas Turbine Systems on the DDG 1000, DDG 51, CG 47, LHD 8, LHA 6, LCS 1, LCS 2 and MCM Class ships.
  • Complete vibration analysis and assessments on shipboard equipment and structure for all classes of ships by using complex custom and off the-shelf computer systems in both the office environment and onboard ship including underway periods.
  • Conduct Assessments, Inspections, and Grooms determining equipment condition and out of specification settings; observe operation of the equipment by ship's force to witness the full range of performance, when possible; utilize appropriate measuring equipment to obtain data for evaluation; evaluate findings and make adjustments and repairs to the maximum extent possible during the time available.
  • Provide Onboard Maintenance Training (OBMT) to Ship's Force technicians in the operation, repair, and maintenance as well as perform/provide support during shipboard gas turbine systems tasking including TSRA, INSURV and Tech Assist events.
  • Plan, coordinate, and perform Vibration Condition Assessment (VCA) visits on US Navy ships and craft.
  • Complete engineering analysis of complex problems on gas turbine and control systems and provide repair recommendations when there is a lack of clear guidance or criteria.
  • Analyze and review inspection data to determine source of fault, and recommend repair, replacement, or other corrective action.
  • Report findings/discrepancies as required to the designated Team Leader and/or Branch Head of Code 251 via Material Assessment Form (MAF), Prisms/ETC Software, TAAS-Info, debrief and/or Technical Assistance Visit Report (TAVR) within two working days of completion of task.

Location: Full time onsite at the SWRMC in San Diego, CA. 

Typical Physical Activity:  Mix of desk/computer work in an office environment and visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: repetitive motion, traversing shipboard environments (e.g. confined spaces, ladders, hatches), or vision..

Anticipated Travel:  This position involves up to 10% travel, including travel to overseas/OCONUS locations.
 
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay for this position in the identified location(s) is $48.13/hour. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience. This position is covered under the Service Contract Act (SCA) and will additionally receive $5.09/hour in "health and welfare" benefits.

Existing SECRET Security Clearance Required: This position requires an existing active or interim Secret security clearance prior to hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position. A candidate without a clearance but with highly relevant experience may be considered, but still must obtain a clearance prior to hire.

Required Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • High school diploma/GED equivalent.
  • At least ten (10) years of relevant experience within the last fifteen (15) years in the operation, repair, maintenance and assessment of U.S. Naval Mechanical Components and Engine Controllers for Gas Turbine Propulsion and Gas Turbine Generator Engines and their support systems equipment to include but not limited to:
    • LM2500 and LM2500+
    • 501-K17 and 501-K34
    • MT5 and MT30
    • 250-KS4
    • TF40B
    • ETF40B
    • T62
    • Solar T1000S and Solar T1302S
  • Vibration Institute Training Level 1 Certification
  • Marine Gas Turbine Inspector (MGTI)
  • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files and transfer digital pictures from camera to computer and enhance as required and label them for report purposes. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

Required Certifications/Trainings or ability to obtain within 365 days of providing direct support:
  • Vibration Institute Training Level 2 Certification
