Opportunity Profile

Location: Hartsville, South Carolina

Position Title: Electrical Engineer

The Opportunity:
This is a rare opportunity to step into one of the most influential electrical engineering roles within a large paper and packaging manufacturing network. The position exists because a highly respected engineer with approximately four decades of service retired, creating an immediate need for an experienced power systems professional who can preserve and expand a critical area of technical expertise.

Reporting into the divisional engineering organization, the selected candidate will provide electrical engineering support across approximately 70 North American paper mills. Rather than being limited to a single facility, this role offers broad exposure to diverse operations, complex capital projects, and large-scale industrial power systems.

The successful engineer will become a trusted technical resource for plant managers, maintenance leaders, project teams, electricians, and operations personnel. This individual will help solve challenging electrical issues, support critical infrastructure upgrades, and guide engineering decisions that directly impact reliability, productivity, safety, and capital effectiveness across the division.

This opportunity is particularly attractive for a seasoned power distribution engineer who wants to move beyond plant-level responsibilities and influence an entire manufacturing network. The organization is seeking someone capable of stepping into a future leadership path as senior team members approach retirement, creating a succession opportunity with long-term career growth potential.

The Company:
Our client is a leading industrial manufacturing organization with an extensive North American manufacturing footprint. The electrical engineering group supports a large network of paper mills and manufacturing operations, providing technical expertise and capital project execution across the business.

The company's engineering culture emphasizes technical ownership and hands-on problem solving. Engineers are entrusted with significant responsibility and are encouraged to develop practical solutions rather than relying heavily on outside resources. Internal engineering capability is viewed as a strategic advantage, resulting in meaningful project involvement and high visibility throughout the organization.

For professionals who enjoy working in complex industrial environments and making measurable contributions, the organization offers the opportunity to influence major assets and critical infrastructure throughout a broad manufacturing network.

The Boss:
The position reports through an experienced divisional engineering leadership team responsible for engineering support across the North American paper mill division.

The leadership team is focused on building long-term technical strength and is intentionally seeking an engineer who can bring deep expertise in industrial power distribution while developing into a future leadership contributor. The hiring team understands the value of specialized engineering knowledge and is committed to finding an individual capable of making an immediate impact rather than requiring extensive training.

The selected candidate will work closely with senior electrical engineering leadership and an established engineering team, gaining exposure to decades of industry knowledge while helping shape the future direction of the department.

The Position:
The Electrical Engineer serves as a divisional technical expert supporting industrial electrical systems across a large manufacturing network. This role combines power system engineering, electrical design, capital project execution, and technical troubleshooting.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving complex power distribution challenges, supporting operating facilities, and developing practical electrical solutions that improve reliability and performance. The majority of the role is technical in nature, with project management serving as a supporting responsibility rather than the primary focus.

Essential Functions (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Provide divisional electrical engineering support for approximately 70 North American paper mill facilities.
  • Lead power distribution studies, system evaluations, and troubleshooting efforts across industrial facilities.
  • Support electrical systems ranging from utility interconnections through medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution assets.
  • Perform breaker coordination, power system analysis, equipment selection, and distribution system design.
  • Develop engineering solutions for transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, starters, feeders, and related infrastructure.
  • Participate in capital project development, detailed engineering, implementation, and commissioning activities.
  • Generate and maintain electrical drawings, schematics, and project documentation using AutoCAD and related tools.
  • Provide technical consultation to maintenance teams and facility personnel regarding complex electrical issues.
  • Support arc flash compliance and safe electrical work practices throughout manufacturing operations.
  • Travel to manufacturing sites as required to support projects, troubleshooting efforts, and operational needs.

Qualifications:

  • Strong expertise in industrial electrical power distribution.
  • Experience supporting medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems in heavy industrial environments.
  • Working knowledge of electrical protection, breaker coordination, and system reliability principles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical issues and provide practical solutions.
  • Experience producing electrical designs, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and electrical drawing development.
  • Understanding of National Electrical Code requirements and industrial electrical standards.
  • Knowledge of arc flash analysis and electrical safety requirements.
  • Ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively across multiple facilities and functions.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering registration preferred.
  • Significant experience in industrial power distribution systems, power system troubleshooting, and electrical design.
  • Experience within paper, steel, mining, utilities, power generation, nuclear, or other heavy industrial environments is highly desirable.
  • Capital project engineering experience preferred.

Competencies:

  • Technical leadership
  • Electrical system design expertise
  • Power distribution engineering
  • Analytical problem solving
  • Project execution
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Independent decision making
  • Organizational effectiveness
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Mentoring and knowledge transfer capability
  • Customer-focused support orientation
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation quality

Work Environment:

This position operates within a combination of corporate, engineering, and industrial manufacturing environments. The role requires regular interaction with plant personnel and travel to operating facilities throughout the division. Engineers should be comfortable working around large-scale manufacturing equipment, supporting active operations, and balancing office-based engineering work with field-based technical support and project execution activities. Travel is typically expected to be approximately 25% to 35% depending on business needs and project activity.

Compensation:

Our client offers a highly competitive compensation and benefits package designed to attract experienced engineering professionals. In addition to base compensation, the organization provides comprehensive benefits, retirement programs, health and wellness resources, paid time off, and relocation assistance where applicable. The overall package reflects the strategic importance of this position and its impact across the company's manufacturing operations.
