The Line Maintenance Mechanic I performs responsible unskilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines and appurtenances. Employees work as part of a crew engaged in the construction, installation, and repair of water and sewer lines and operate a variety of construction equipment to complete utility projects.
Work includes installing and repairing water and sewer pipes, making taps and service connections, installing hydrants, meters, and valves, maintaining sewer and water line easements, and performing repairs to the water and sewer system. Employees work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, equipment, chemicals, fumes, dust, noise, and other occupational hazards.
Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices. Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work.
Assignment Note: There are three (3) vacancies for this position. One (1) of the three positions will be primarily assigned to sewer closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspections. All positions remain subject to the full duties and requirements of the Line Maintenance Mechanic I classification.
- Operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps and service connections meet standards.
- Lays water and sewer pipe; repairs and replaces sewer and water lines and related facilities.
- Installs, services and tests water meters and meter setters.
- Operates the sewer rodder to unstop sewer lines.
- Operates front end loader, dump trucks, jackhammers, tampers, pipe threading machines, tapping machines, trenchers, air compressors and boring machines.
- Installs hydrants, meters, valves, clamps and related pipeline apparatus; sets meter boxes; repairs and replaces fire hydrants.
- Operates tractor with bush hog attachment to mow and maintain sewer and water line easements and rights-of-way.
- Performs other related tasks as required.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Six (6) months of experience in construction related utility work
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Attainment of a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire.
- Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments and in extreme hot and cold weather.
- Ability to work on-call and call-back assignments as required.
