What we offer:
Group Summary:
Job Responsibilities:
For most electrical products, DC to DC voltage converters are essential. In automotive applications, these converters must operate reliably over a wide temperature range while maintaining low electrical noise, minimal electromagnetic radiation, and competitive cost levels.
One promising approach to reducing cost and component count is to integrate the required inductor directly into the PCB (Printed Circuit Board), eliminating the need for an external magnetic component.
We are looking for Master's students with a background in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, or a related field who are interested in taking on this challenging thesis project.
The objective is to investigate how an inductor can be integrated into a PCB for a high-frequency DC/DC Buck converter suitable for automotive applications.
The work will include:
- Theoretical analysis of PCB integrated inductors
- Design and simulation of high-frequency inductor concepts
- Evaluation of magnetic materials, PCB stack-ups, and geometries
- Development of prototype designs
- Laboratory testing and validation of electrical performance
- Comparison with traditional inductor solutions regarding performance, manufacturability, and cost
Expected Outcome
The thesis is expected to:
- Identify feasible approaches for integrating inductors into a PCB for high-frequency Buck converters
- Evaluate electrical, thermal, and electromagnetic performance
- Demonstrate and validate selected concepts through simulation and laboratory measurements
- Assess advantages and limitations compared to conventional discrete inductors
- Provide recommendations for future implementation in automotive electronic products
Qualifications
You are a curious and motivated student with a strong analytical mindset and an interest in solving complex technical problems. You enjoy taking initiative, working both independently and as part of a team, and communicating your ideas clearly. Most importantly, you are passionate about electronics and eager to contribute to innovative solutions for future automotive products.
To be successful in this thesis project, we believe that you have:
- Ongoing Master's studies in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, or a related field
- An interest in electronics, power electronics, or embedded systems
- Knowledge in electromagnetics, magnetic components, and PCB design
- A desire to combine theoretical work with practical testing and measurements
- Good analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others
- Good communication skills in English
